Muncie, Elkhart,Gerstmeyer AndMilan 5s PoisedBy RON GILBERT INDIANAPOLIS Wt—The 44th Indiana high school basketball championship tournament Saturday seems lo have just about everything except enough seats. jEven that deficiency is being! partly taken carc of by near-blanket television coverage. Ten TV stations are carrying the games this year, compared with three a year ago. ,The draw itself offers a rare matching of sluggers and boxers. The first game sends out Muncie Central and Elkhart — two power-[houses with size, height and speed to burn. The second pairs Terre Haute Gerstmeyer and Milan — stylists with a deft artistry and a maddening change of pace. The championship game, of course, will provide a contrast be- /- p tween the two'styles of play. ■:?There are plenty of other con-i'jrc trasts in the picture. One team;Grc is shooting for its fifth champion-]sw* ship, and the others are hungry,/\pfor a first. iDMuncie Central fans have en-GSlt;Cjoyed four titles, a number matched j1 r--only by Frankfort, and would likei Ho to be the first to bag a fifth. The1 Bearcats are in the final four for-the 10th time, a total exceeded: only by Anderson. The Muncie players themselves; haven’t had enough of the victory j fare to be blase, though. The start-iing five is composed of three jun-j iors and two sophomores, who were! freshmen and eighth graders when; the Bearcats won two' years ago.And for the first time in a good] many years a team from a small1 town is conceded a real chance to: ^ crash through. pjnThe Milan Indians aren’t favori- j_0 ites, but nobodj; is writing themircg. |off.
