(AP)~A ;grira Tommy Burleson scored 121 of his 26 points after All-■ American teammate David Thompson was lost with an early injury to lead North Carolina State, the nation’s No.l basketball team, to a 100-72 rout of Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon for. the National Collegiate Athletic Association Eastern Regional title.' The Wolfpack’s 26th straight victory in a 28-1 season moved it to the national semi-finals at Greensboro, N.C., next Satur-. day afternoon against the Western Regional winner.Thompson, 6-4 junior frontcourt leaper, crashed to the floor after soaring up after a missed tip shot with 10:17 left in the first half.He lay still for several seconds as play continued and Pitt's Keith Starr scored a basket that cut State’s lead to 24-21.'Play then was halted for several minutes and a hush fell over the previously roaring crowd of 12,400 as Thompson lay motionless while his teammates paced the floor in anguish.Finally, Thompson was placed on a stretcher and taken to a hospital where x-rays later revealed no serious injury. _It was right after Thompson left that the 7-4 Burleson went to work, aided by two ball hawking itchy-fingered guards, Monte Towe and Mo Rivers.Burleson hit corner shots, hooks and layups for 11 points and a half-time total of 16 to give his team a 47-41 lead at intermission.It was the 28th straight home court victory for Coach Norm Slaon’s team which- ran up the highest score yielded by Pitt inits 25-4 season.If State needed any further inspiration, it came with 10 minutes left in the last half with the aroused Wolfpack leading 70-49.An announcement was made that x-rays revealed no serious injury to Thompson who had scored eight points before his injury.With less than seven minutes to go, Thompson made a dramatic reappearance at court-side, his head bandaged after several stitches had been taken.He joined his teammates on the bench for the remainder of the game an they hoisted him to their shoulders for the traditional post game net cutting.State officials said they intended to have Thompson returned to the hospital, possibly overnight, as a precautionary measure.Burleson hit nine of 19 shots and collected 12 rebounds. Towe scored 19 points and dished out six assists; Rivers contributed 17 points and Phil Spence added 10 points and 14 rebounds.Pittsburgh’s second team All-American Bill Knight scored 19 points to lead his team, eight in the last 10 minutes after the issue had been resolved.N.C.
