Two high schools that have never won a State basketball championship will meet here tomorrow for the Class AA title.Warwood (23-2) and Sophia (24-1) will tangle at 1 p.m. to open the championship round of the 54th State tournament at the Field House.They reached the final round with contrasting victories last night. Warwood rallied to a 38-37 victory over Ceredo-Kenova in a game of tight defenses. Sophia trounced Parsons, 83-60, in a fast-shooting match thatwas never close.None of the coaches seemed satisfied with their team’s performance. The consensus wasthat the teamsthree free throws, as Warwood scored 13 points for a 27-27 tie. Bill Kennedy led the latter’s surge.His two free throws gave Warwood the lead for the first timein the last quarter, and from there the game see-sawed to the finish.were “tight”and showing State tournamentjitters.“I thought our team looked good in spots, and ragged in other spots,” said veteran Sophia coach Bob Douglas. “In fact, all four teams seemed to playsloppy ball.Though his team controlled its game with Parsons almost from the tipoff, Douglas said it could do much better.Coach Neil Gutshall of Par-itsons called his team’s performance one of its worst of theyear. He said this was the worst showing made by any of the three teams he has brought to the State tournament.Jim Foti, whose Warwood team gave him his 403rd high school victory, said his club was not moving well or getting good shots. He praised Ceredo-Kenova, however, for playing a strong defense.Coach Dale Craycraft conceded Ceredo played poorly on offense. “Their defense mav haveGreg Chuch goaled for Warwood to tie the score at 35-35 with 3:27 left.Neither team scored again until Kennedy’s free throw with 33 seconds to play gave Warwood the edge. Ceredo missed a chance to tie when Kennedy, grabbing a rebound, threw the ball into die hands of Floyd Stark and then fouled him. They cashed 14 of 18, as Ceredo made only 9 of 22. Kennedy led everyone in scoring with 17 points.In the nightcap, Sophia jumped to a 20-7 lead in 7 minutesand built it to 45-26 by half-time. Both teams were shaking players free against pressing defenses, with Sophia doing it more often.George Stone, a four-year veteran, led the Blue Hawks with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore substitute Mike Smithfinished high for Parsons with 14.
