Ah Shaw!By WAYNE SHAWSports EditorIt’s gettin’ so a guy daresn’t leave town without a pair of snow shoes. Twice now inside of two weeks we’ve been snowbound. What complicated matters over the past weekend was the third annual News-Republican's Area coaches dinner which was scheduled for Sunday.SOME OF the invited coaches were snowbound along with us in Des Moines after the girls’ state basketball tournament while others were at home. Telephone line trouble at home prevented us from getting a call through to clarify conditions regarding roads in the Boone area. The P.A. man at the auditorium and WHO radio cooperated in trying to get our message of cancellation to the coaches. It wasn’t until we got a phone call through to Boone Sunday afternoon that we learned Bob Lamson was stranded in Minneapolis unable to get a plane out of there to Iowa. He’s been on a scouting mission. Lamson was to be speaker.Attendance at the Iowa Daily Press all-state meeting in Des Moines Sunday morning delayed our departure for home and also prevented official notification of the coaches of the cancellation.THE PREVIOUS week we had attended a Uttie League regional meeting in Chicago as a district representative and had become snowbound in Newton from Thursday morning to Saturday. That had its complications, too, in that our boys’ state tournament press tickets were in Boone.Noting driving conditions en route home Sunday and the thought occurs that it was a mighty smart move which the Iowa Highway Patrol made in forbidding traffic to leave Des Moines after the game. One of the loudest cheers of the tournament accrued from that announcement made at the Veterans Auditorium. The teenagers and by and large the adults had a tall ball during the night.KlOA disc iockev Frosty Mitchell walked six miles from his home to the auditorium to stage a sock hop with recorded music.Card games, napping on boards in the bleachers downstairs. tours of the vast building and eating occupied the fans throughout the night.AMONG THOSE stranded were Coach Deraid Swisher and 30 student athletes from Grand Community high at Box-holm Swisher waited 3 hours to get a call through to home. Finally the superintendent's call from Boxholm to him was completed. At mid afternoon on Sunday it took almost an hour tomake the 30-mile trip from Des Moines to Ames. There weresome 15 cars stalled in snowdrifts in ravines and on theshoulders of highway 69. One car was abandoned practicallyin the center of the southbound lane of traffic.• * *Special apologies go to Ogden Coaches Robert Blair and Keith Peterson who made the trip to Boone for the coaches dinner before w-e could reach them by phone to notify them of the postponement. After arriving at Boone we contacted all the invited guests—several as they were about to walk out the door to make the trip, A busy line caused us to just miss the Ogden coaches.Rita Howard, a key member of Boone’s only girls’ state tournament team (1958), will participate in the National AAU tournament at St. Joseph, Mo.She’ll be performing with the Look magazine team of Des Moines. Rita, a member of the Civic Reading club, a subsidiary of Look, during the regular season, is considered to be a regular on the Des Moines team. The best players from Look and Civic Reading have been combined for the national tourney trip.LAST SATURDAY Rita played against powerful Iowa) 1 Wesleyan in a game won by Wesleyan 62-34 at the Northhigh gym in Des Moines. The former Toreadorette went scoreless.Playing AAU type ball appeals to Miss Howard, a 5-foot 10-inch gal who is doing secretarial work for the magazine. She likes the travel part of playing basketball. Her team 5so. has or will play in Milwaukee. Kansas City and St. Joseph, iver Mo. before the end of the campaign. The attractive former Toreadorette was one of the top All | scorers on her Civic Reading club team. It handedvot- the Look team its only two defeats of the season.Jna] “Rita’s main problem has been getting use to the ruletur- which permits tying up the ball all over the court,' said herirst-! coach. “We have several girls bigger than her so we’ve movedher to a side position on offense and she has had to make adjustments in her style of play,” he continued.Di-hiship,am-iIowa Wesleyan Coach Olan Ruble is anxious to obtain
