CHAMPIONSHIP TOCRAWFORDSVILLELEBANON GETS SECOND PLACEIN BASKET BALL TOURNAMENT.DESERVE GREAT PRAISERegarded as the Brainiest Team in«•Su-Contest.Were Defeated byEndurance.'“Stevenson of Crawfordsville is in a class by himself when it comes toperior Weight andBerry Regarded as “Best Ever.»»rWhile the basket ball team of the Lebanon high school did not win the state championship in the tournament held at Bloomington last Friday and Saturday, it made a splendid showing and landed in Becond place, an honor that is not to be dispised. Crawfordsville won the championship defeating Lebanon in the final game Saturday night by a score of 24 to 17. The Athenians owe their victory to the fact that they were heavier and had more endurance than the Lebanon boys, and are an exceedingly fast bunch, besides. They won their place fairly and are entitled to all the honor they have received. While the failure of the home team to win the championship is a disappointment to their friends and followers, they have not been criticised in the least, everyone recognizing the fact that they have made a splendid showing. The high school students and the citizens generally are proud of them. When Darnall, Little, Sicks, Ollie Berry, of last year’s team, graduated and Taylor transferred his allegiance to Crawfordsville, it was thought by many that our basket ball glory had departed, and the prospects were not flattering. Clark Berry was the only one of the old squad left, and the work of getting together a team from untried material was indeed a bigtask. Berry, however, went to work to organize a team that would be a credit both to the school and the city, and he has succeeded far beyond the expectations of the most sanguine. When they defeated the alumni team including some of the stars of last year’s team, many considered it a case of luck and thought no more about it. The boys, nothing daunted by the lack of appreciation, went ahead playing a consistant winning game, with the result that today they stand as the second best team in the state. While at Bloomington the Lebanon five was regarded as the brainiest team in the tournament, and commanded the respect of the college players, who geneAlly are inclined to ridicule the high school teams. Several times their work as of such a brilliant character as to bring the spectators to their feet.Coach Rackle of Indiana University in picking an all-state team, selected the Crawfordsville team with the exception of Taylor, whom he displaced in favor of Porter, of Lebanon. The Indianapolis Sun, however, puts Porter and Berry in place of Taylor and Shaw. During their stay at Bloomington the Lebanon team was the guest of the Independents, and they are loud in theirpraise of the treatment accorded them. He is one of the coolest youngsters that ever stepped upon a basket ball floor and in addition he rarely misses a chance at the basket. At throwing foul goals he is a wond-der. Porter of Lebanon Wins out over Taylor of Crawfordsville because of his floor work. His playing has been consistent throughout the season. Barnhart of Rochester, a brother of the Indiana star, is also a good man but did not have a chance to compete in the tournament.Berry, of Lebanon has a shade over Shaw of Crawfordsville at guard. Both men are big and careful, committing but few fouls, but Berry is the cooler head and the better passer. Hill of Crawfordsville iB easily the best floor guard in the state, being fast and scrappy and able to get goals when he gets a chance. Brumbaugh was chiefly responsible for Bluffton’s getting into the semi-finals. He is a fast man and scrappy, but lacks experience. All the rest of the centers are easily out-classed by Myers of Crawfordsville. He outjumped every center in the tournament; is a good floor worker and a sure goal getter. Brock-enbraugh of Lafayette gets a place on the second team over Scott of New Albany because of his superior speed.Berry of Lebanon would make an excellent leader for Indiana’s “best ever” high school team and Glasscoe the former Wabash player, would be the best coach.OBp.Oleihi11linwaiitT01tlCldiPaftDEAD IN THE WOODSJAMES WHITECOTTON A VICTIMOF HEART DISEASE.Had Gone to Farm to Cut Wood ande:ribsiois Supposed to Have Overexerted Himself.James Whitecotton, of Advance, a prominent and well known farmer, was found dead in the woods on his farm, two and one-half miles west of Advance, about 11:30 last Tuesday morning. The lots belong to Harry McDaniel and Frank Matthews and will coBt the church $4,426. Another meeting will be held tonight to discuss further plans of procedure. While nothing definite has yet been agreed upon, it is likely the church will undertake to build a structurecosting about $26,000 and the material used will be either brick or stone, most likely the former. Subscriptionswill be solicited likely before an architect is employed, and the size and plans of the church will likely be determined by the liberality of same. The site chosen, while not unanimous*** wchoice of the church, are nevertheless considered quite desirable, in view of the fact that the lots fronts toward town and are easily accessible to the larger part of the congregation. The old church and the lot on which it is located will be sold when the congregation is ready to vacate it.hIft\rstIfN1yc£tItt8Stit\VFor Disturbing Meeting.Charles Haven and Ralph Abbitt were arraigned in Squire Perrill’s court yesterday on a charge of disturbing the meeting at the Holiness church last Sunday night, Judgment was withheld during good behavior, but should the boys violate their parole they will be fined $5 and costs each.IccEttIRefused a License.Robert W.
