1989 NJCAA TOURNAMENTHagerstown stuns No. 1-ranked EaglesBy Laird MacGregorTht* Hutchinson NewsTop-ranked Southern Idaho led the Hagerstown, Md., Hawks on all but two short occasions.Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, one of those times hap pened to be when the final buzzer sounded.Thus, Hagerstown upset Southern Idaho 84-83 in their opening game of the second round of the NJCAA tournament Tuesday at the Sports Arena.GAME 1 —Hagerstown 84, Southern Idaho 83NJCAAThe Golden Eagles led by as many as 18 points only to see the With 2:42 re-Idaho's David free throws,in the second half,Hawks claw back.Staining, Southern Henderson sank two giving the Golden Eagles an 80-72 lead. But a strange series of events •led up to the outcome.Hagerstown’s Dexter Boney hit two free throws at the 2:32 mark to pull the Hawks within six, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and cut the deficit to four with a slam dunk. A layup by Charles Chase on the next possession made it two, and a layup by Boney off a steal knotted the game at 80.Southern Idaho reclaimed the lead with 1:20 left on a basket by Anthony Williams.
