TournamentKANSAS CITY, March 15.-4P) —The St. Benedict’s College Ravens, a team that didn’t have a chance a week ago, today boasted the national inter-collegiate basketball pennant.The Ravens climaxed a series of upsets in beating Western Illinois’ Leathernecks of Macomb 62-56 before 10,500 in Municipal Auditorium Saturday night.Coach Ralph Nolan’s Kansans got the job done with a rousing finish after Western Illinois hadled most of the way.Springfield (Mo.) State had a comparatively easy time in the preliminary game, beating Arkansas Polytechnic of Russellville 75-61. Springfield won the small college national title in 1952 and’53.St. Benedict’s, an all-small Catholic school of 450 students had only one close call, 62-61 over Pasadena (Calif.) There were no unanimous choices.One sophomore, Stan Davis, Ball State center from South Bend, was named to the squad, and the only freshman was Bob Wessel of Evansville.The team:Forwards—Keith Greve, Butler and Waveland, and Robert Wessel, Evansville College and Evansville.Centers—Gene Loercher, DePauw and Danville, 111.; Don Merkie, St. Joseph’s and Chicago, and Stan Davis, Ball State and South Bend.Guards—Joe Lee, Indiana State and South Bend; Jack Cross, Ball j State and Rushville, and Jim Crosley, Butler and Pendleton.Suggs Headed For Another Banner Year
