SPEED MANIACS OWN MONROE STREETAUTO AND MOTORCYCLE DRIVERS SCORCH BUSY THOR-OUGFARES, CARELESS OP WHOM THEY MURDER OR MAIM.No ordinance has been passed permitting it, but by tacit official understanding North Monroe street, since being paved, has been surrendered to autot motorcycle and oth» er developments of speed lunacy. The only police notice of this so far is a report made by Officer Dan* iels that autos shoot Monroe at the rate of 100 njiles an hour. Probably one nearly caught Daniels at the switch and his estimate of the speed rate may be slightly exaggerated, but that an exceedingly dangerous speed is common across the river is a matter of apprehensive concern to everybody except city officials charged with enforcement of safety regulations. The motorcyclists take the bicy* cle path or asphalt as suits them at a criminally insane rate and tbs public has the choice and chance ol flight or death at the crossing*. An* tos race the length of the thorough-fare, throwing in the high clutch as soon as they turn off Bridge street* The fact that Monroe Is badly torn up and so dusty It is difficult to se* safely makes no difference. The dust is doubtless an auto boon for. it conceals Identity by hiding th* numbers. Some of these days a child or woman or man will be picked up crushed and lifeless. A driver will explain he didn't mean to do it# showing the victim was responsibly by merely occupying the mas earth as an auto, and there’ll h* * great howl, maybe. But all that won't restore the life nothing less than murdered by official consent to senseless driving through none*-forcement of the law.s#ilearned trwta v frnm Pslftrmn M
