Our Joplin Golf Courses. Here is argument for the consummation of the scheme to get a $30,000 club house at Joplin’s municipal golf course at Schifferdecker park. Two Springfield men were Joplin visitors last Sunday. They drove down to play golf. One is a newspaper man, the other a successful man of affairs in other lines. On the way down they fell to discussing the question of golf and golf courses, and held, in effect, this conversation:“It’s a queer thing that we are driving seventy miles to Joplin to play golf when Springfield is a larger and richer town than Joplin,” said one.“It is queer,” agreed the, other. “Why are we?”“Because Joplin has two golf courses and Springfield still is lacking even one. Joplin has had better natural advantages along this line. Also, it has some men Who have seen the advantages of good golf courses as an attraction to tourists, and it has capitalized on its natural advantages.”From this they drifted into a discussion of how the situation might be remedied, which ended by the newspaper man’s quasi-humorous appointment of his friend as Official Agitator to get a real golf course for Springfield. But Joplin has a big advantage by reason of a good start. If the proposed club house at Schifferdecker park can be acquired we will be a haven for touring golf players for years to come. And it is important to keep in mind that people who travel around playing golf are, in virtually every instance, business people of importance in their home communities. Golf is unlike every other sport in the world in this regard. It has won its popularity by reason of its value for really re-creating business men.
