LIVE OAK—Corning erupted for a seven run third inning and went on to defeat Live Oak 9-1 here yesterday in the season openerfor the losing Lions.Cardinals Cord Smith and Tom Tomlinson, who Live Oak coach Pat Dempsey considers, “two of the best pitchers in the area,” combined for 14 strikouts and limited the young Lions to just three hits.Five Live Oak pitchers went to the mound for the Lions in the game. Cooper Amyx, who pitched the fourth and fifth innings, yielded no runs and'looked impressive,according to Dempsey.“I’m pretty happy with our pitching, but we have to pick up the defense,” said Dempsey . Live Oak committed eight errors in the game.Offensively, Rick Schies shined for Live Oak, belting out two doubles and scoring the lone Lion run. Scott Baxley drove in Schies with a single in the third inning, toaccount for the Lion’s limited punch at the plate.The Lions were scheduled for a Thursday game at Lindhurst, but the game has been moved to Live Oak’s field due to poor fieldconditions on the Blazer diamond. Corning won the jayvee contest 6-5, overcoming Jeff Goodman’s two for three plate performance.
