II, 1979Orange Coast Ousts RCCLong Beach PolyBy CARL SAWYERRegister Sports WriterOrange Coast College guards Ray Orgill and Paul Akin were cruising on high octane fuel Saturday night as the stellar combo put on a dazzling show to lead the Pirates to an 84-73 basketball victory over Riverside City College.Coach Tandy Gil 1 is * sophomore sparklers in the backcourt combined for 48 points, 15 assists and eight steals, but the regional playoff victory over the Tigers required the additional talents of the rest of the Pirates before it went intothe log.For a team playing without two starters, one of them the team's MVP, Riverside made the Pirates work for everything they got. Two-year All-Conference guard Tommy Wight, who missed becoming the Mission Conference's MVP award by one vote, damaged an ankle last Thursday and watched from the bench.Freshman star Terry Brush stayed in bed to cure a bronchial infection and things didn't get. any better for Riverside coach Daverouted in the first 20 minutes. His rebounding and quick series of field goals kept the Tigers from being run out of the Pirate gym.Nigel Lloyd, unheralded Eric Dickinson, Ken Copeland and Roberson battled gamely to move the Tigers into range of the South Coast Conference champions, but each time Riverside got to within seven at 46-39, 61-55 and 72-65, the Pirates would spurt.Riverside made its mostserious threat at the 1:37 mark when Craig McGhee drove inside for a field goal that threatened the Pirates at 72-67, but twin brother Carter McGhee missed a 1-and-1 at the line with 1.25 showing and the Tiger charge ran out of gas.Akin added two free throws at the 1:19 mark, two more charity shots with 42 seconds left, then Orgill added four foul shots and Akin tossed in a final two free throws after the final buzzer as a punctuation mark.Orgill finished with his season high of 27 points, seven assists and six steals. He was 9-for-10 at the line.Akin contributed 21Waxman when he headed his club toward Costa Mesa.The Riverside team bus broke down and the Tigers had to cool their heels until a backup bus completed the trip.“We’ll give them a good game,” promised Waxman as he looked at his short bench before the start and the Tigers did just that.The trusty trio of Orgill, Akin and Pete Neumann at the post, all sophomores, triggered a fast Orange Coast start as the Pirates took a 2-i lead on a Neumann field goal and never trailed again as they fought off the struggling Tigers.As they have all season, Akin, Orgill and Neumann provided the spark. Two shots by Akin upped the OCC lead to 10-5 with 14:52 left in the first half. Orgill fired from long and short while Neumann led the board patrol and suddenly it was 22-1! Pirates, 27-15 Pirates and 42-29 Pirates at the halftime break.Former New York prep star Eddie Roberson, a mobile 6-8 leaper at center, saved Riverside from beingBy DAVID OSTERMANRegister Sports WriterLONG BEACH - Ver-bum Dei High made its seventh CIF basketball title one of its easiest Saturday night, jumping out to a 13-point halftime lead and completely dominating the second half while defeating Long Beach Poly 62-47 in the 4-A Finals at the Long Beach Arena. A near-record crowd of 21,763 was at the game.The Eagles, who won four 4-A titles from 1971 to 1974 and 2-A and 3-A titles in 1969 and 1970, were neverreally challenged in the 1979 playoffs, winning their first three games by 15-point margins and dominat-ing Morningside in the semifinal for a 84-78 victory. That domination continued in the finals as the Eagles never lost their 10-point lead in the second half and held a 17-point lead at one point in the third quarter.Cliff Pruitt and KimLewis scored 16 each forVerbum Dei while EddieGordon and Eddie Fields had 11 rebounds each.Ray Whiting led the Jack-rabbit attack with 11 points.Verbum Dei took control of the game in the second period with two long scoring runs.The Eagles ran off eight unanswered points over a three minute span to take a 22-12 lead with 4:44 to play, then poured in seven straight points in the final two minutes, including a free throw by Eddie Gordon with no time on the clock to take a 33-20 lead into the locker room.Poly hit only 8 of 22 shots in the half for 36.4 percent.points, eight assists and two steals and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line.Roberson’s 19 topped the Tiger scoring and Steve Timmons led the Pirate rebounders with nine. Gary Wills came off the bench to steady the Pirates with 12 valuable points. He was 6-for-9 from the field, all of them long range missiles.Orgill raised his assist total to 302, tieing the Orange Coast career record. The tie won’t last long. Orgill will continue his expert work Thursday in the quarter-finals of the PONY-California State Championships at Fullerton State.“Yes, I’m very pleased to be going to Fullerton,” said Gillis with a smile. “Akin and Orgill played very well for us, but it was a team thing again. There were no real losers though, only a lot of winners.Downey guard Mike Chavez was one winner. He sank the winning points with only five seconds left on a 18-foot jump shot from the top of the key.North had tied up the game at 65 on a Don Barnes baseline jumper with a minute to play. Chavez guided the Vikings through a stall and then called timeout with 10 seconds left. On the inbounds pass from Steve Ziegler, he went straight to the middle of the court and released a high-arched shot, which hit only netThe Huskies called timeout with only three seconds left. They had managed to tie the game at 63 under almost identical circumstances in regulation, but this time the Huskies couldn’t get a shot off.North Riverside, withsuperior rebounding, held the lead through most of thesecond half. But Downey erupted for seven straight points within 1:02, starting with a Ziegler jump shot and ending with a John Ritchie three-point play to take a 59-57 lead at 2:5$ of regulation.Both squads traded baskets with North tieing the score at 51 with 1:31 to play.Downey started a delay and called timeout with 10 seconds, then hit Ritchie driving toward the basket on the inbound play for what looked like the winning points with only seven seconds to play.North had other ideas though. The top-seeded team, (which went in 27-0 on the year,) called timeout, then went down court with three quick passes and fed Chuck Shapiro for a five-foot shot and overtime.Barnes, a 6-6 center for North, had an outstanding game, leading all scorers with 23 and pulling down 14rebounds. And for the first time in eight tries, he can start worrying about the second round of the State JC Basketball Tournament.Mulligan was 0-7 in state tourney piay going into Saturday night’s regional ehcounter with Long Beach City, but the Gauchos didn’t keep him in suspense long.. Saddleback recovered from an early Viking scoring spree to take the lead late in the first half, then rah away in the second to post a 105-87 victory and move into the quarterfinals of the tourney next week at Fullerton State.; -T’m just glad this thing (the playoff losing streak) is^over,” Mulligan said.Not only did the fourth-year Gaucho coach break hik tournament jinx, but he also recorded his 100th winat Saddleback. Earlier in his career, he took Riverside City College to the tournament four times without success.In spite of Mulligan’s big night, it was his players who ran off with most of the glory. Center Kevin Magee scored 27 points in a 65-point second half that blewthe game open after a close first half.Magee’s 11 second-half field goals broke a Saddleback record and his game-high 33 points was the best by a Gaucho player this year. He blocked six shots.Forward Randy Whiel-don and guard Ed Patrick each scored 10 points to keep Saddleback in the game in the opening period.The Vikings jumped out to a quick 8-point lead early in the half, but the Gauchos recovered as Patrick began to penetrate the lane and Whieldon began to score on long jumpers from outside.Saddleback tied the gamefor the first time with 7:20 to go and eventually took a 39-36 lead into the lockerroom.“We made a couple of offensive adjustments to get the ball to Magee,” Mulligan said. And the Gauchos did just that.The 6-8 freshman scored inside almost at will in the second half and ended Long Beach’s last hope of a comeback with two straight slam dunks late in the second half.Whieldon continued his hot outside shooting and finished the game with 26 points. Patrick finished with 12, but left the game with 11:31 to play after an altercation with Viking forward Chris Klein.The fight left Patrick with a bloody nose and left the Gauchos without an adequate ballhandler.“I thought we were really in trouble when he was ejected,” Mulligan said. “We just don’t have anyone else to handle the ball.”Fortunately for Saddleback , the Gauchos had a 13-point lead at the time. And they managed to take advantage of the Vikings’ scrambling comeback attempt to free Magee under the basket for several easy shots.Forward Kevin Fuller led Long Beach with 24 points. But when he gets going he’s sensational.”He was definitely sensational in the fourth quarter, after sitting out the final 3:32 of the third with four fouls.He powered Cabrilio back from a 51-41 deficit, with outside shooting, follow shots and a sensational dunk with only 0:38 seconds which all but wrapped up the game, with a 65-62 lead.He finished hitting 15 of 23 shots from the field and had 11 rebounds. His play overshadowed a strong performance by Daryl Pegram, who finished with 27 points and had 13 rebounds in the gameGross was named MVP ofthe afternoon triple header at the Arena, which crowned champions in the small school, 1-A and 2-A divisions of CIFSt. Monica overcame a stubborn St. Joseph’s team to win the 1-A crown while Pasadena Poly won its second straight small schools championship with a 46-44 squeaker over Prep League rival, Chadwick.St. Joseph, second place team in the Los Padres League, was a Cinderella entry in the final and almost recorded a Cindarelia Ending.Leon Wood. St. Monica’s designated gun, came intothe game with a 49 point average and California’s No. 1 hll-time scorer with 2,665 career points.
