Titan women eve titleWomen's basketball beat Alma JCollege in NCAA first round playoffBY BECCA HARTAdvanee-Titan Sports EditorIt’s been four years since the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh women’s basketball team saw the doors to the NCAA Division III Championships open.This year they’re standing in the doorway.Facing Alma College (Mich.) on Saturday, the Titans completed the second-round tournament on top by only four points.The first half began like a game of tag with each team never ahead or behind by more than five points.Sophomore center Wendy Wangerin led the first half with 13 points while junior forward Jessie Hoinacki buckled down againstAlma’s 5’3” guard Amy Doucette to make the team click.“Defensively, we matched up better going small with Jessie on their small forward,” Head Coach Kathi Bennett said. “I think that was a key. Wendy would step in and make the big shot. That’s exactly what we talked about and she did it.”The first half left UW-Oshkosh behind by one at a score of 32-31. Bennett said that Alma did what they wanted with the basketball. That’s when it was time to make a change in the Titan defense.“In the second half, we tried to put so much pressure (on them) that they had to put the ball on the floor and let their guards drive to make the play ” Bennett said. “We had the exact same game plan against banClaire.”The second half began much like the first with a spread no larger than five points and the Titans fell behind 59-58 with one minute on the clock.In 13 seconds, sophomore guard Tracy Johnson sunk a two-pointer to take the lead and stay ahead.The Titans stole the game when Alma missed a three-point shot at 17 seconds and sophomore guard Shelley Dietz grabbed the rebound. The Titans scored one more at the line ending the game ahead 63-59.“You have to have luck and you have to be healthy,” Bennett said. “I think we have both of these.”The Titans advance to the third round facing Bethel College at AlbeeHall on Friday at 8:30 p.m.Community rates camtrns
