State basketball tournament#Amarillo nips Kimball for AAAAA crownAUSTIN (AP) — Amarillo, boosted by eight fourth-quarter points from substitute Brant Capps, turned back a late Dallas Kimball rally Saturday night to win the Class 5A championship 68-63 at the boys state high school basketball tournament.After trailing by as much as 10 points in the third quarter, Kimball outscored the Sandies 14-2 to take a 53-50 lead with 4:56 left in the game.But Capps, who led the Sandies with 19 points, and Sherman Ray scored four points each to put Amarillo back in front for good.Ray added 16 points and Ashton Nowak 14. Amarillo’s Sammy Simpson, the team's leading scorer for the season, hit just 3-of-9 shots from thefield and finished with 8 points.Leonard Perry, who scored 10 of the Knights’ 14 points during their second-half run, was the game’s high scorer with 21 points, including 11 of 12 shots from the free throw line. He finished the two-game tournament with 53 points.Three other Knights scored in double figures — Arlin White with 17, Roderick Hampton with 12 and Anthony Virgil with 11.Morton 73, Dripping Springs 59Jerry Joyce poured in 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Morton turned back a Dripping Springs rally for a 73-59 victory in the Class 2A title game Saturday at the state high school basketball tournament.Morton, runnerup last year to Grapeland, led 37-21, at the half before the Tigers rallied in the third quarter. Pat Leonard, Dripping Springs' leading scorer, netted 12 of his 24 points in that period as Morton’s lead dwindled to 48-43.Nazareth 53, Archer City 49Darryl Hoelting hit seven of eight free throws in the final 2:06 Saturday as Nazareth ended seven years of frustration by defeating Archer City 53-49 for the Class A schoolboy basketball championship.Nazareth first came to the tournament in 1980 but lost in the semifinals that year and also lost in the title game in 1984 and 1985.On Saturday, a controversial call by an official gave Nazareth a three-point margin, and Hoelting's Free-throw shooting clinched the victory.With Nazareth leading 42-41. Robert Davis of Archer City was whistled for fouling Biily Steffens of Nazareth when it appeared Steffens had charged into Davis.Port Arthur Lincoln 55, Mansfield 39Port Arthur Lincoln’s Jeffrey Lewis led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points Saturday as the Bumblebees won their third Class 4A basketball title with an easy 55-39 victory over Mansfield at the boys high school state tournament.Lincoln’s superior height and leaping ability stifled normally high-scoring Mansfield, holding the Tigers to their lowest point total of the season. The Bumblebees also outrebounded the Tigers 36-28 and harried them into 14 turnovers, which were converted into 18 Lincoln points.Cleveland 57, Dimmitt 56Cleveland erased a seven-point deficit in the final 7l£ minutes and nipped Dimmitt 57-56 on Richard Johnson^ shot with 10 seconds left to win the Class 3A schoolboy basketball championship Saturday.Cleveland, winning its first title in its second tournament appearance, closed the gap after Dimmitt went ahead 47-40.
