Gehrig Dergo, who Porter visited yesterday afternoon for recruiting purposes, said this morning that Porter planned to travel to Glen Ellyn last night to check up on wrestler Jim Morris.Minooka’s banquet ran smoothly, beginning with school superintendent AltonMattingly reading a letter from the board of education congratulating the athleticteams and ending with a standing ovation for the two state champs and their coachesDuring the course of the two-hour program the athletes were asked to stand in front of the large gathering while their respective coaches made short remarks.For wrestling Reed Perry and Mark Mitchell shared Most Valuable honors. Perry, whoalso was honored with the Dave DeCoste Memorial, won the 155-pound Class A state crown and Mitchell, a junior, won the 145-pound state titleRick Van Asdlen won the wrestling sportsmanship award and Bruce Miller was cited as the most improved matman.In basketball junior allconference center Dan Mason was named Most Valuable Plaver Dave Bretsch was cited as most improved. John Underhill won the sportsmanship award, Joe Galloway won the Wayne Thompson Memorialfree throw shooting (70.4 per cent) award and Kirk Hunclder of the frosh-soph won the Bill Rushton Memorial free throw award.Baketball cheerleading sponsor Cheryl Pillsbury introduced her squad members: frosh-soph — Cheryl Gladkowski, Brenda Cotter, Sarah Miller, Sharon Underhill and Robin Davis; varsity — Cheryl Miller, Donna McGee, Cindy Bennett, Lou Georgantasand Lynn Knudson.Wrestling cheerleadingsponsor Darla Engstrom introduced her squad: frosh-soph Diane Alberico, Kim Duray and Val Elenwood; varsity — Cindy Durkee, Maureen Fleming and Colleen Sichling. Mascot Charlene Mills also was honoredFreshman basketball coach Kevin O'Neil, whose team was 11-4 and conference tourney champs, introduced his award winners: Tom Amos, Pete Dean, Herb Fishburn. Jack Dempsay, Bill Price, Paul Talkington and Terrv Underhill.Beeler said that his team fulfilled the high expectations he had for them and this was accomplished with a great deal of team depth.Frosh-soph wrestling coach Jim Butterbach, while saluting his athletes, called his team members among the hardest workers he ever coachedMinooka's frosh-soph mat-men, 8-8-1, included: JimStratz, Steve Ashby, John Staehling, Eric Buhle, Ted Hoffman, Steve McKendry, Greg Brown, George Goldasich, Mike Rittof, KevinSwiggett.
