Avery Second In Region PlayBy JERRY GRISHAM Special to The News KILGORE — The Avery Bulldogs basketball team put up a valliant effort in the final game of their fight for a regional title here Saturday night. But the LaPoyner Flyers ran their season-unbeaten (40-0) team past the Bulldogs, 59-45, in the final game of a three-game series.There was one small consolation: Avery’s Hiram Hurd placed on the All-Tournament Team in the Region 3, Class B tourney.Earlier, Avery beat out Tom Bean, 61-50, Friday night, and Union Hill, 66-48, Saturday morning, to gain second place trophy for the region.SATURDAY night, the LaPoyner team never trailed in the deciding game, sailing on the strength of hot hands Ozell Hambrick and Larry Cumby. LaPoyner took an early 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, and at the half lead by eight, at 28-20.In the second half, Avery staged a rally and pulled to within six points at one point But the Flyers went on a scoring binge and pushed the lead up to 12 at 35-23. The Avery Bulldogs railed again, but the third period ended with the Flyers on top, 39-31.The final eight minutes consisted mainly of LaPoyner slowing down their offense and keeping the ; ball away fi!orn;the Bulldogs. ■; Nevertheless,’ Avery again creeped to within five.But in the waning minutes, the Bulldogs found themselves in foul trouble. The final three minutes found LaPoyner consistently at the free-throw line, and the game was out of reach Gf Avery.Hurd was Avery’s top scorer against LaPoyner, with 20 points. There were no other double-digiters for Avery against LaPoyner.In both of the first two games of the three-game series, Avery had a littletrouble putting it together at the start but pulled out the victories in the last half.AVERY COACH Gene Weaver reported that, “due to tenseness and nervousness,” Avery couldn’t get things going until the last half of the game against Tom Bean, which is a school near Sherman. But the last quarter did the trick for the 61-50 victory,Hiram Hurd lead the Avery pack with 24 points in the Tom Bean game. Next were Jerry Brooks, 11, and Larry Huff, 14. Against Avery, Tom Bean had only two double-digit scorers — Brent Hollensed with 24 points and Bill Robbins with 12.The score by quarters: Avery, 13, 18, 9, 21; Tom Bean, 16,11,8,13.THEN, Saturday morning, Avery’s luck was a little better in the first half against Union Hill; but, still, the team didn’t really pull it out until the last half. There, Weaver thinks, “stamina and strength did it for us.”The Avery team see-sawed in the scoring during the first half, recovering from an eight-point lead that Union Hill gained as the game started. At the half, Avery trailed by one. The scoring by quarters in Avery’s 66-48 victory went like this: Avery, 8, 15, 18, 25; Union . Hill 12,12,12,12.Avery’s' Hurd again was the top scorer against‘Union Hill, coming out with 28 points. Behind him were Brooks with 16 and Wooten with 13. For Union Hill, Gregg Aldrege.had 20 and Mack Waller 10.The record for Avery after the second game, before the Poyner game, for the season was 34-5. Tom Bean's final season record was 20-10.LaPoyner, the team Avery was playing Saturday night, is from a place near Athens.If Avery wins the Saturday night game, the team goes to state playoffs.
