(Journal photo by Bob Jensen).GUARD DUO GOES WILDHighland Drops BoiseBY JOE RICHMONDJournal Sporls EditorThe Highland Rams may. have lost to the Boise Braves several weeks ago during league play, hut in the on-? that counted Wednesday, Hie Items came on with a rush to grab a 72.61 victory in the Slate A-l Basketball Tournament's opening round.The victory boosted Highland’s record to 19-6 and put tliern into die semifinals at.3 p.m, today against Coeur d’Alene.Guards Byron In The Woods and Randy Slane poured the coal Into the Ranvs fast break, combining for 45 points as they he!f ed to wear down the Region Two titlists in the final period.Until die final eight minutes, the game was nip and tuck, the lead changing hands' 13 times during the second and third periods.The Bravos held ccntrol most of the first half, thanks to pinpoint outside bombing by guard Bob Frisch, who canned six buckets before Intermission, Trailing 17-14 after one period, the Hams started surging and caught up for the first lime at 19-19 when Kelly Palmer hit a jumper.The Rams' Randy Slane hit two quick outside shots before Boise fought back fora 25-23 lead un four free throws and a basket by lanky Cam Burke. The lead then changed twice- more before In The Woods hit from' 25feet out seven seconds before halftime to knotthe tally at 35-all,Botli clubs were hampered by turnovers in the third period, and Coach Ron Kress’ local quintet took a five-point lead despite some hot gunning by Boise's Dave Laxson, Mite Warren and Frisch.Boise, in fact, started working the ball* more inside to the 6-5 Warren and when he sank his first bucket of the afternoon with 1:09 left in the third period he sliced the Rams’ lead to one point.He hit another short, jumper moments later lo again pull Boise close, but Slane and Steve Andrew retaliated for the Rams.In The Woods, who led all scorers with .24 points, canned three outside jumpers and Slane hit from the base line as Highland built a 62-55 lead early tn Hie final period. A moment later, In The Woods swiped a Braves pass, drove and scored a lay-inand it was 64-55, die biggest lead either club had in the game,Boise, now 12-12 for the season, shot an excellent 58.6 per cent from the field. Rut it wasn't shooting near as often as the Highlanders, who drilled in 27 of 63 attempts for 42,9 per cent.The Rams also went 16 fcr 18 at the charity stripe and had the advantage 011 Die hoards, 40 rebounds to 32.
