He connected on the shot to make the score 2-1 before coming back to toss in a field-goal giving the Blue Hawks a 3-2 advantage.Doug Greer playing at one of the forward spots for Sophia, tossed in a 15*footer to push the Hawks into a 5-2 lead but Stoco looking for its 12th win in 21 games, came back to take a 6-5 lead with 2:59 remaining in the quarter.McKinney tossed in a long jumper to give the Indians their final points of the period before Sellards pitched in the last points of Hie stanza making the score 8-7, in favor of Stoco.McKinney broke the game wide open for Stoco in the second quarter connecting on two consecutive fielders to give Stoco a 12*8 lead.With less than three minutes left in the half, Paul Christian i hit two consecutive shots to put I the mighty Indinas out frontshots in the first period, began hitting as they scored 13 points and held Sophia to nine in the latter period.Numerous turnovers held the Blue Hawks back in the first half but after their halftime conference with Coach Bob Douglas the Hawks came back out ready to go.Sophia’s guards, failing to shoot in the initial half, burned the nets in the third quarter with Jeff Spicer, Johnny Hawkins and Simpson getting three straight baskets before Stoco could score. With 1:17 gone in the period Sophia had taken a 22-21 advantage.It didn’t stay that way long as McKinney, master of the long shot, pumped a 20-footer which didn’t even touch the rim as it swished through the nets. This put the Indians back in the lead once again, 23-22.The game was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way through the period with Sophia tying the score, 30*30, before McKinney hit on a long shot from the comer to give Stoco a 32-30 ' lead. The period ended with the boys from Coal City in command, 36-33.Sellards, Sophia’s junior pivotman, tied the score for the last time on a three-point play in the first minute of the final period. After this, Simpson hit on one of two foul shots giving the Blue Hawks a 37-36 advantage.Sellards hit once again for Sophia sending the Hawks to a three point, 39-36 lead.Coach Earl Arbaugh’s cagersunmolested to give Stoco a three point, 44-41 advantage with 3:58 left to be played.From then on Sophia had to go after the ball and fouled Stoco players as they did. Parks stepped to the charity line on two occasions and with the greatest of ease pushed in three of four shots to give the Stoco team the win.Smyre and McKinney led Stoco in scoring with 15 points each.
