Rams’hopesstalledWilliamsport wins 1A West title, 32-27MIKE MATHEWSTlmes-Newa Start Writer__ACCIDENT — A game in the 50s was expected, and it turned out to be just that. But no one could have pre dieted that 59 points would be the total for both teams in Saturday night’s Maryland Class 1A West Region championship game at Northern.Fifth-seeded Williamsport waited over three quarters to get its first lead (28-27) then, although play continued, everyone waited for over four minutes until action resumed. When it did the Wildcats held off second-seeded Southern for a 32-27 win for a trip to the state tournament. The Rams (15-8) put together a near flawless first half and built the largest lead of the night (21-12) at the half when Jeremy Sanders took a tipped three-quarters court inbounds pass and, in nearly one motion, split two defenders, grabbed the ball and fired up a 15-footer that found the mark as the half expired.“We couldn’t have played much better in the first half,” Southern coach Tom Bosley admitted.Even with Mark Dawson, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, Brian Reams, the team’s second-leading rebounder and a key on defense, and reserve Rich Skipper out with injuries sustained in the last six days, the Rams controlled the first half. They were 10 of 18 from the field (six for eight in the second quarter), and did a great job boxing off the taller Wildcats for a 12-8 edge on the boards.Sanders finished with eight points and Mark Elliott seven to lead Southern, with ail 15 points coming in the first half. Doug Copeland had six points and a team-high seven rebounds, sophomore Jason Hamrick turned in a solid game at point guard, and Brian Carlson had three blocked shots and all six of Southern’s points in the second half. All six came in the third quarter. But Williamsport, which hit only six of 21 shots in the first half, warmed up in the third quarter. Defensive pressure forced the Rams into several bad decisions and seven third-quarter turnovers.____ Maryland 1A BoysFinal, .......See—Rams—88
