Girls basketball at FHS has been an on-again, off-again sport throughout its history Franklin. Girls basketball was played in the 1920’s and then dropped sometime around 1929 or 1930. It was started up again by Effie Wygant at Franklin in the middle 1950’s and again dropped in 1958 or 1959.Girls basketball was playedunder girls rules up until 1971.In 1971, girls basketball reappeared under the PIAA sponsorship and the game was the same as the one played by the boys. Girls were actually allowed to sweat and get battered around in much the same manner as the boys.Coach Sandy Houk coached the first two modem-era FHS girls basketball teams in 1971-1972 and 1972-1973 playing to a 13-13 record.Jan Glance Ferren then took over the sport from the 1973-1974 season until the 1978-1979 season. Franklin was 17-67 in those trying years.Coach BUI Mook assumed the head coaching slot in the 1979-1980 season and produced an inglorious 2-14 slate in his first year. The foUowing season the Knights were 7-14 which made Mook-coached teams over two seasons winners of nine games and losers of 28.All that changed in the 1981-1982 campaign. The Knights posted a 20-5 season and made the playoffs only to lose their first game. Franklin went 21-5 the foUowing year again making the playoffs only to lose once again in the first contest. In the 1983-’84 season, Franklin was 10-10 and lost again in their first playoff game to be eliminated a third time with a 10-11season.Franklin is now 20-1 andcoach Mook’s won-loss career record is at 60-49.
