A $300,000 gift from the Norris Foundation for a Lake Superior State College ice arena was announced today by/Detroit Red Wing owner Bruce A. Norris and his sister, Marguerite Norris Hiker, vice president of the Detroit Hockey Club.College President Kenneth J. Shouldice said construction is expected to begin this Spring on the $5,230,000 physical education building of which the ice arena is a wing.The entire project, which will be two years in construction, will be named the James Norris Physical EducationCenter after the late founder of the Red Wings.James “Pop Norris was born in Port Arthur, Ont. A Chicago industrialist, in 1933 he bought the Detroit franchise in the National Hockeyives $300,000for LSSCLeague, re-rtamed the team the Red Wings, and with general manager Jack Adams at the helm steered them to a top position in hockey,“He loved the north country, his son said, “and knew its woods, waters and people well.The First Family, of Hockey was a place Pop Norris built for his clan. He and a few other hockey leaders kept the sport alive professionally during bad times, eventually lifting it to.its major place in U.S.A.-Canadian athletics.The College’s present physical education facilities consist of a 900-seat gym, the riding ring of Ft, Brady before the military property was converted to a school in 1946.The College hockey team now plays in the city-owned Pullar Stadium, formany years the fall training home ofthe Detroit Red Wings.(Sunday, March 3. the LSSC hockey team defeated Bemidji. 4-1 to capture first place in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Tournament.)“It's not just hockey, which is of course closely associated with his father, Norris said, ,;but it is (he college itself—what kind of place it is—-that clinched our decision on the memorial.“It’s a relatively young school, just over a quarter century, with only the last efght of those as a four-year college. It’s also the smallest State college, and while I haven't bee to (lie Sault recently I'm intrigued by the school's locale and the kind of students it attracts.‘There’s a kind of young person today looking for the small college in the small town in Michigan's north woods. That's what they find at Lake Superior State. They like what they find, and so do 1.Ir. Shouldice said that Norris “felt strongly about the need for private support of higher education. He and his sister have given generously to this end in scholarships and other ways. Their interest in young people and what's happening to them today comes through in our conversations and correspondence.All of us here at the College.” Dr. Shouldice said, are delighted that the Norris family has shown its interest in this special way”
