WINHS Five lakes,Holds Early Lead;In Semi-Finals(See game picture on Page 7)By CLAIR BROWN West Newton High School's basketballers avenged an early season defeat and at the same time advanced to the semi-final round of the WPIAL Class B playoffs with a 53-41 vie-*;iory over Benlleyville High last night at the Monessen High gymbefore a crowd of nearly 1,000fans.The convincing win, which saw West Newton lead all the way except for a 2-0 Bentleyville edge in the early minutes of action.Coach Sherman Brizzi, of West Newton, will now lead his victorious Hornet cagers against Wampum in a 7:30 contest at the Pitt Field House next Wednesday.Fine First PeriodWest Newton actually won last night's game by virtue of a fine first quarter which saw the WNH3 five post a 15-4 edge, holding Bentleyville scoreless from 3:50 of the initial quarter until the first period buzzer.Both teams showed signs of nervousness early in the game and neither could hit for a point, despite numerous attempts, until 6:30 of the starting frame.Bentleyville closed the margin to eight points at the beginning of the second quarter when Bruce Gibbs and Cullen hit on fielders but Ron Danielson connected for a field goal and a 'free throw while Gibbs was adding another two-pointer and Allen Specht and Tim Dixon jumped the count to 22-9 in West Newton's favor.Bentleyville was within eight again at 25-17 just before the half but Danielson had West Newton a 10-point bulge at 27-17 by the intermission.Early in the third period West Newton moved to a 33-20 lead and seemingly was on its w'ay to a runaway victory when the Steve TeDeck-coached Bear five suddenly “caught fire'' and began hitting with accuracy for the first time in the game pulling withining and passes kept the losers in the game. He led the 3HS scoring with 13. Gibbs getting 12.Hon Danielson, who made several goals in the clutch and helped with fine board work, led the West Newton scoring with 12 points to top Gidick by two for WNHS honors.West Newton's big asset was controlling iis own boards.Most exciting shot of the game was Reggie Dixon's all-the-way, hook shot which opened the second half of action and amazed the fans.West Newton shot 33 per cent on 22 of 62 tries while Bentley-ville was 16 of 52 for 31 per cent. Both hit on nine free throws, West Newton on 16 chances Bentleyville on 13 tries at the charity line.Bentleyville had beaten West Newton in an exhibition tilt, 53-49, but The Brizzimen were without the services of Allen Specht, a sparkplug with his fioorwork in last night’s game, along with the Dixon brothers and had just begun to roll to their successful season.WEST NEWTON FGH.
