Might Lift | Negro Ban• Kansas Cily (AP) — A major problem confronted NAIB executives today as the 32 - team bracket for next week’s national intercollegiate basketball tournament neared completion..Emil S. Liston, executive secretary of the NAIB, and his associates were faced with t h o problem of lifting the ban against Negroes in the p 1 ay-Offs for the Oylmpic berth.In New York yesterday. Harry D. Henshel, a member ol the New York U. S, Olympic basketball committee, said he bad suggested to Lou Wilke of Bartlesville, Okla., the committee chairman, that the Kansas City tournament winner be eliminated from Olympic consideration because Negroes are not p c r-roitted to play,Liston said his committee would discuss the situation here Saturday night. The national Intercollegiate starts here Monday.He said there was a “possibility” the executive committee could be polled on the ruling before tomorrow but he knew of no decision to do so,Liston said the rule against Negro participation is not a part of the NAIB by-laws, but that it was a ruling of the tournament committee when the organization was set up in 1940. ,Several eastern teams, includ- ! ing Long Island Univer- 1 sity, .Manhattan College and Siena college have rejected bids ' to the tournament here because of the rule.The U. S. representative to the Olympics is to be decided in an eight - team tournament at New York March 27. 29 and 31. The field calls for the two NCAA finalists, winner of the national invitational tournament at New York, the NAIB champion three teams from the national AAUj-and one YMCA aggregation. !•Hensel suggested that three! NCAA teams be permitted t o compete to fill the eight - club • lineup, dropping the NAIB champion.
