Only last summer Douglas got rid of his ulcers and now he finally has another sectional title.Jimmy Stone, who was given the Albert Veneri Award following the game as Raleigh County’s top athlete of 1966*67, and Nathaniel Hairston led the Sophia victory as they combined to dominate the backboards.Once the Blue Hawks took the lead at 9-7 on a field goal by Mike Allen late in the first period they were never headed as they dominated the game against the eold-shooting Shady Spring team.Only in the fourth period were the Tigers able to give Sophia a scare as the trimmed a 17-point Sophia lead to eight points at 52-44 but eight consecutive foul shots by the Hawks broke the Tigers* back.Actually, it was the second period that broke the contesters UpsetQuintetinintlow; mjnentsvedrs.lowoldvasthe; it lue 2aday.onor-terdeck-91Gwinn following with 17 markers.Selected to the all-tournament team were Larry Taylor or Rupert; Tim Brown of Smoot; Bob Kuffner of Raincile; Gary* Pomeroy of Meadow Bridge, Roger Bonner of Ansted; Arnold Gwinn of Meadow Bridge; Ed Deligne of Ansted; and Ron Nuckles of Ansted.The outstanding cheerleaders were Loretta Mitchell of Ansted; Nancy McClong of Crichton; Janice Meadows of Meadow BRridge; Shelly Hicks of Rainelle; Sharon Cogar of Rupert; and Wanda Conhenour of Smoot.Meadow Bride*Arnold Gwinn Gary Pomeroy Monty Gwinn BandaU Patterson Ernie Goddardwide open as Shady Spring suddenly couldn*t buy a basket and the Sophia five started hitting on everything it threw up at the hoop.The Hawks held an 18-15 lead but they suddenly broke loose to score nine straight pointsand carried a commanding 31-jl8 lead into the dressing room at the half.Sophia upped its lead to 37-18 in the third period before Joe Robinson was able to can a fielder for the Tigers with 6:09 to play.The Shady Spring team trimmed the lead to ten points at39-29 with 2:03 showdng on the clock in the third quarter but Stone and Hairston combined to score six straight points and the Hawks once again held a comfortable bulge.Hairston and Stone got baskets shortly before the end of the period and the Hawks held a 48-31 lead going into the final eight minutes of action.Although the lead looked as safe as the gold at Fort Knox the Shady club w*as determined to make a game of it.Archie Burgess and Robinson suddenly got hot and before you could blink your eyes the scoreboard clock showed Sophia with a shakey lead of 50-42 with 5:43 still to be played.However, trailing 52-44, the Tigers were pressing to get the ball and as a result committed four consecutive fouls.The hot-shooting Blue Hawks were deadly at the charity stripe as they made eight straight fouls, four by Hairston, and got a basket from Alike Allen for a 62-44 lead and it was all over.Ilariston and Allen led the Sophia scoring with 14 points each but Stone had 17 rebounds and Hairston 14.Robinson, Shady Spring’s sterling guard and playmaker, dumped in 25 points to take game honors.
