Also pictured is Southern’s Scott Shahan (23) and Brad Moore of Williamsport, which won its third straight region title, 58-43.MIKE MATHEWSTlmes-News Staff WriterACCIDENT — Williamsport’s big three were too much, and the result was a third straight Maryland Class 1A West Region championship for the Wildcats.Brad Moore, Andy Amst and Alan Moore teamed for all but four of Williamsport’s points and came up big at critical points in the second naif to help the Wildcats hold off a second-half rally by Southern for a 58-43 win Saturday evening at Northern.Brad Moore scored 20 points, with all but three coming in the first half; Alan Moore had 15, with all but three coming in the second half, and Arnst had a powerful inside game with 19 points and 16 rebounds as the Wildcats (21-5) advanced to the state tournament. The trio had all but one of Williamsport’s 21 field goals.Williamsport has not given up more than 50 points in its last 10 games. Not coincidentally, the Wildcats are unbeaten in those 10 games.Jimmy Pamepinto led Southern with 15 points and had five rebounds. Matt Ruff came off the bench and played a key role in the second half comeback, making 9 of 11 foul shots and scoring 11 points in addition to pulling in a team-high six rebounds. Rutt also turned in a big defensive effort, holding Brad Moore to just a three-pointer in the second half.Williamsport surged ahead quickly in the first half, with as much as a 20-point lead (32-12) with 15 seconds left in the second quarter.The halftime score read a 17-point Williamsport lead. The final score showed a 15-point Williamsport win. In between, it was anything but a comfort zone for coach Kevin Murphy’s Wildcats.Southern (15-11) scored the first eight points of the second half and helped cause six Williamsport turnovers in the third quarter. The Rams chopped their deficit to single figures early in the period and got to within six three times, 34-28 after two Ruff foul shots in the third quarter, and 39-33 and 44-38 in the fourth, both times after Pamepinto three-point goals.Southern would get no closer, largely due to a 29-percent shooting night (14-for-48) and several big three-point shots by Alan Moore.The Wildcats hit six of nine foul shots in the final 1:13 to bump the lead back into double figures.“We had a pretty good lead at the half but I knew Southernwouldn’t roll over. And they didn’t. Honestly, it was getting scary. They kept coming and took us to the wire,’’ said Murphy. “Alan Moore banged a couple of three’s late in the game to help stem the tide.“Our kids hung in there. It was a road win, and a good win,” Murphy continued. “Southern is a good team, is well coached, and plays very good defense. They would win a lot of games down our way.”Southern got into the hole early by making just 7 of 26 first-haif shots, with a handful of the misses coming within 10 feet. Williamsport made 13 of 25 in the first half, then cooled off in the second and finished 21 of 44 (47 percent).“We missed some easy shots early, and they seemed to hit everything early,” said Southern coach Tom Bosley. “I thought we played a little tight early, and at times in the first half were a little less patient than we wanted to be.”Things changed abruptly in the third quarter, as Ruff hit two foul shots and a jumper, Pamepinto two foul shots and Jason Sweitzer a three-pointer to bring the Rams to within 32-24 in the opening three minutes. Williamsport did not score until the 3:45 mark, on a fastbreak by Alan Moore.Arnst scored in the lane to give Williamsport a 39-30 lead at the end of the period, and each time the Rams crept to within six in Sec Southern 6D_Boys Prep Playoffs
