SpringWildcats advance to Region championship with 85-71 winCUMBERLAND — Jill McGowan scored 24 points in the first half and finished the night with 38 to lead _the top-seeded Westmar Wildcats past Clear Spring, 85-71, in one Maryland Class 1AGirlsPrepBasketballWest Region girls semifinal game Thursday at Fort Hill High School.The Wildcats (19-2) defeated Clear Spring for the second straight time, after Clear Spring handed them one of their two losses on the season, an overtime decision on Jan. 28.Westmar will now take on Southern in the West Region championship game Saturday, 7 p.m., at Fort Hill. Southern reached the final by defeating Mount Savage, 56-33, at Northern High School. Westmar and Southern split their two regular season meetings.Westmar took a 24-22 lead in the first period and opened it to 45-36 at the half. The Wildcats maintained an 11-point lead entering the fourth period. Once Westmar established itself, Clear Spring could not get any closer than six points.“1 wasn’t surprised by the high score,” said Westmar coach Valery Broadwater, “because we’re very capable. I’m not happy we gave up 71 points, but with Heather Aleshire being able to score from anywhere at any time, it’s hard to keep her under control for 32 minutes.”Aleshire, one of the top scorers in the state of Maryland and the all-time leading scorer in Clear Spring history, led the Blazers with 26 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals Tracy Bishop scored 24 points, 18 coming on three-point goals.Westmar received 15 points from Michelle Andrews, nine apiece from Evie Morris and Cami Cutter, and eight from Mindy Van Pelt. Cutter and Van Pelt each had 10 rebounds for the ’Cats. Andrews had eight assists and McGowan seven steals.Southern56Mount Savage 33ACCIDENT-— Carrie Cannon scored 14 points, while Emily Friend and Angela Shaffer scored 12 points each as a balanced Southern team defeated Mount Savage Thursday night at Northern High School.Southern built a 26-16 lead heading into the half, as Mount Savage was forced to spell Amy Shaffer, who had picked up her fourth foul.Mount Savage scored the first two buckets of the second half to trim the lead to six, 26-20, but Southern rattled off an 18-1 run to take control.Sylvia Paesani led Southern defensively with 10 rebounds and Friend added nine.
