Kratzberg HeroicsCarry CH, 65-64Leroy Kratzberg canned two charities with six seconds remaining in overtime Friday night to allow the Central Heights Vikings to nip Wellsville, 65-64, in non-league action on the CH hardwoods Friday night.Finishing the night with 27 points, Kratzberg broke the 1,000-point barrier in just 50 games of his high school career for a 20-plus, per-game average. The 27 tallies boosted his career total to 1,014 points,But those impressive figures obviously weren’t on the minds of Wellsviile’s Eagles, who played the Vikings nip and tuck all the way. The Eagles turned a 14-12 first-quarter deficit into a 30-all match atthe half, and took the lead, 50-46, at the end of three.Heights came back in the fourth quarter to out-score the Eagles 13-9, to tie the contest at the end of regulation, 59-all.Wellsville had a chance to win it going away, after Kratzberg sunk his free throws, by getting an open shot at the other end of the court, but much to their chagrin, the close-in aerial missed its target.CH hit 26 of 49 shots from the field to close the night at 53 percent, while Wellsville put up 63 shots and sunk 28 for an average of 44 percent.Tom Cox scored 18 points—6 of 8 from the field and 6 of 7 from the line—andRod Foltz added 12 tallies to help Kratzberg pace the Viking scoringattack.Wellsviile’s Rick Rhoades scored 20 tallies to lead the Eagles, while teammates Scott Rybum and Bill Starling added 14 and 12 points, respectively.Kratzberg and Cox both grabbed 10 caroms to enable CH to edge the Eagles in rebounding, 30-21.Now 14-2 over-all, the Vikings take their 7-0 Three Rivers League record into the sub-state girls’ and boys’ tourney they will host after first-round play.As the top seed, Burlington will host eighth and last seeded Pomona on its home court in first-round boys’ action Tuesday, while the second-seeded Vikings host seventh-seeded Osage City.Also participating in the 3-A event will be fourth seed Silver Lake, fifth-seeded Yates Center, third-seeded Jayhawk Linn and sixth-seeded Humboldt.Monday, girls' action begins and includes a contest between the third-seeded Vikings and sixth-seeded Jayhawk-Linn.
