Western Wrestlers Lose At State Meet* Ttie three Red Raider matmen who qualified and went to the State Wrestling Tournament at Champaign last weekend found up-state competition a little rough. Jerry Mayer, 165-pounder who filled in Wilson’s gap4as heavyweight and took second in sectionals, was pinned by Helmstader of New Trier. The 220-pound lad from the Chicago suburb later took third in the meet.Dan Weiner and Chuck Broz found going just as tough. Weiner wrestled Morovick, 115-pound captain of the9Morton High team, and lost by a decision. Morovick later took fourth in• ithe meet finals. Broz was pitted a-gainst another tough opponent, Webb of Maine, who likewise gained a decision on the cadet. Thus, Western%could get no men past the first roundand therefore scored no points.■ -' ♦Granite City, which had qualified its entire team of 10 men in the sectionals, likewise lost out at Cham-paign. The Warriors were expected to finish within the top 10 schools,4but finished 24th instead. Only one Granite niatman even got a draw and so- Granite got one lone point.Chicago-area schools completely | dominated the meet after the first place winnei', Champaign, had sewedup the contest. New Trier finished♦second, and many other Chicago schools were high. Western was one of twenty schools entered which couldnot score any points. There were 45schools entered in the meet.
