March 3.—One of the most : important feather-weight contests ever decided in this part of the country will be that at the American Ath-. letic club tonight between Benny Yanger and '‘Kid” Broad. It means more to the local boy than it does to the case-hardened and rather passe New Yorker. A possible victory means - that Benny will be raised at once to the foremost ranks of tlie little fighters. Then he will be in line for contests with any of them. Defeat for him means more than that he 'will have to remain quiet for a time and take what is offered him. .The Italian is going a couple of pounds out of his class in mcatingtlie sturdy eastern man. But the difference in the weights, if there actually be any. is hardly enough to talk about. Under terms of the agreement the}' are to scale in at 125 pounds at 6. o'clock in the evening. Broad says .. he can make that weight without the slightest inconvenience. In fact, he claims to be already well inside of it .. and will have to do but little work to keep at the present notch. Yanger says he is the true feather weight and that he is able to make 122 pounds at any and all times it is necessary. If what each of the men say is true, there scarcely will be two pounds difference in them when they sfrake hands.-- •Yanger’s future depends largely on the result of this contest. He' has met no such man as Broad, whereas the latter has met the best men in the world and has yet to be decisively beaten. If the Italian lad gets away with this, his initial effort in the top-notch class, lie can then claim to be one of the champions, along with Terry McGovern and Young Corbett and about a half dozen others who claim to liavo a look-in at the title. He always has been eager to get a chance at Terry, but always named a weight that did not suit the Brooklyn boy. Now that he has matched with Broad at a figure that would suit. Terry, lie cannot naggle any more about giving away a couple of pounds. In Broad he is meeting the toughest of them all as far as a guelling fighter goes.Yanger is the Favorite.Yanger is a favorite in the betting, but there is no good reason why he should be. Broad has met better men and the only true line that can be obtained between the boys is their contests with Young Corbett. Each boxed the Denver man twice and each knocked him out once. Broad did the trick in four rounds and it took Yanger twice as long. Later there was a decision in ten rounds between the pair that didn’t decide much. But there was a different story to tell when Yanger and Corbett boxed the second time. Then Corbett had Benny down more than half a dozen times in a terrific eight round, and but for the greatest gameness in the world Yanger would never have survived. As it was he stuck to the end and then got a draw.So on that line it is plain that Yanger and Broad are about even. But then Yanger has never mot and defeated Dave Sullivan, one of the toughest of the tough, as Terry McGovern found out a week ago in Ixmis-ville. Reports loll that Broad did more scandalous things to Sullivan in their battles than McGovern did in the terrible fifteen rounds at Louisville. And there are other men mat Broad has met that class higher than even the best, outside of Young Cor-1 bettv that are contained in Yanger‘8 record.Yanger has a good shade the better of the preliminary argument in that he is a comer, full of ambition and youth, and perhaps* has been better taken care of than Broad. The latter has gone along in his present manner for some time. He is after the money the game affords rather than any honors of position it may contain. He is satisfied to fight, he cares not who, as long as there is money for doing it. With Yanger there is a little different aim. He wants to be the feath-r er-weight champion. Ho must get to the top and that is the way lie is being managed. •Tliei little Italian never trained so carefu.lv and never looked In better condition for a battle. Realizing that this is; a crisis in his career, he has left 'nothing undone, if beaten tonight there will be no excuses to offer. Winner to Meet McGovern. The winner of the contest has a chance to meet Terry -McGovern at the Southern Athletic club in Louisville Derby night. The club would prefer Broad, because of his having appeared there and is a great favorite. But if Yanger beats the New Yorker in decisive fashion there is little doubt the match will fall to him. So there is aii additional incentive for the pair to put up the battle of their lives. The card is exceptionally strong. Hugo Kelly and Mike Schreek are to meet in the semi wind-up. These welter weights are certain to put up a great contest. Their iast meeting re-: suited in an even break after a slashing affair of the limit.Another strong feature to the card will be a reiurn match between “Kid” Goodman, the Boston bantam weight, and A1 Fellows, the local boy. Their last meeting was a draw, but many thought Goodman was entitled to the decision. But it was a ‘fairly even affair and gave the club members plenty o. chance to test their lungs.Malachy Hogan will be referee of the main event, George Siler, the club’s regular referee, having refused to act for persona] reasons in any more of Yanger’s contests.
