2-BBig Spring (Texas) Herald, Sunday, March 2,1986Snook ends Nazareth reignAUSTIN (AP) - Six-foot Connie Cole scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday as Snook upset Nazareth 36-33 for the Class A girls’ state basketball championship.Nazareth was seeking its ninth title since its first tournament appearance in 1976.It was the first championship for Snook, which lost in the semifinals in 1978 and also last year to Nazareth by 18 points.Snook led 32-23 after three quarters but committed eight turnovers under relentless defensive pressure in the final period as Nazareth closed to 34-33 with 33 seconds left in the game.Heiman, a 1985 all-tournament player like Cole, was held to 11 points, half her average but still making her top scorer for Nazareth.Only two other players besides Cole scored for Snook. Charlotte Benford had 6 points and RhondaThomas 4.Snook finished with a 28-4 season record, and Nazareth 28-5.ABERNATHY 51, ROGERS 42AUSTIN (AP) — Phoebe Dunn scored 16 points and defensive star Mary Cooper added 10 Saturday as Abernathy won its fifth state girls’ basketball title, defeating Rogers 51-42 in the Class 2A final.Abernathy took control of the game early in the second quarter after Rogers led 15-14 at the end ofthe first period.Dunn, who was All-Tournament last year when Abernathy lost inthe finals, scored 12 points in the first ttialf and used her defensive skill in the second half to shut down Rogers’ high-scorer, Keyla Faglie.Faglie had 14 points by halftime but could only manage four more after intermission.Mikki Webb also scored 10 points for Abernathy, which won state championships in 1958-59, 1981 and 1984.Shirley Schiller had 13 rebounds and eight points for Rogers before fouling out with 16 seconds left in the game.Abernathy’s victory pushed its season record to 28-5. Rogers, a semifinalist in 1975 and 1979, fell to 30-6.LEVELLAND 44, AM CONSOLIDATED 43Levelland’s Terri Meyer hit two free throws with 1:11 left in overtime and College Station AM Con-solidated’s Voccia Calhoun missed one with six seconds left Saturday as Levelland eked out a 44-43 victory and the Class 4A title in the girls state high school basketball tournament.Calhoun had hit two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation to pull AM Consolidated into a 42-42 tie and send the game into overtime.The Tigers, losing only their second game in 33, held a 10-point halftime lead, but the Loboettes went on a 16-4 rampage in the third quarter, led by Kristi Schonerstedt’s six points and two steals. That gave Levelland a two-point edge going into the final eight minutes.Dailene Terrell led the Loboettes, 32-2, with 12 points and nine re-bounds, followed by Kim Cavanaough with 10 points.Meyer finished the game with eight points, six of them from the free throw line.Gwen Thomas was high scorer for the Tigers with 12. Nelda Roy added 10 points and 12 rebounds.In its last state tournament appearance, Levelland lost in the finals to Waco Richfield in 1984. AM Consolidated was making its first appearance in the tournament.SOUR LAKE 72, INGLESIDE 53Freshman Yatisha Bosha scored 19 points and the other four starters for Sour Lake Hardin Jefferson also were in double figures Saturday as the Hawks defeated In-gleside 72-53 for the Class 3A girls’ state basketball championship.Hardin Jefferson, starting two freshmen and three sophomores, ran off 14 unanswered points within four minutes of the second quarter to overcome a 16-15 Ingleside lead.Jones scored 13 for Hardin Jefer-son, her sister Antionette had 12, Stephanie Edwards had 14 and Latanuya Fontenot, 10.Hardin Jefferson’s defense forced 21 Ingleside turnovers, which the Hawks turned into 24 points.Lisa McKitrick, a 6-foot-2 senior, tallied 21 points for Ingleside and tied with teammate Nina Perez for the most rebounds with 11 each.Hardin Jeferson’s first girls’ basketball title climaxed a 33-4 season. Snook won 36-33.VICTORIA 57, TYLER LEE 44AUSTIN (AP) - Tisha Boldt and Glynna Alkek scored 15 points apiece to lead Victoria to a 57-44 victory over Tyler Lee Saturday night to take the Class 5A title at the girls’ state high school basketball tournament.The victory marked the Stingarettes’ fifth state title, a record for 5A, and the third title for coach Jan Lahodny.Lee trailed by 11 points, 43-32, atthe end of the third quarter, but cut Victoria’s lead to five, 43-38, on Lisa Dark’s layup with 4:40 left toplay.Victoria finished its season at 33-3, while Lee finished at 30-2.
