Lizton WinsThe Lizton Legion basket ball team won the state independent amateur i tournament held at the Y. M. C. A. In Indianapolis last week by defeating Kingman in the-final game, 31 to 17. The winning team put up a defense that was almost impregnable, except at the beginning of the second half, when Kingman spurted and came within two points of tying the score. Lizton having assumed the lead shortly after the' start of the game. The Legion boys pulled together and. from thfen on could not be stopped.Lizton’fought her way to the finals by hanging the K. O. on the three Marlowe brothers and the rest of the famous Sandusky team. This was a hard-fought game, however, the first standing at 9 all. However, Sandusky seemed , to tire rapidly In the second half and the game ended with Lizton on top, 28 to 16. Kingman won over the Muncie Maroons in the other semi-final tilt, the count being 25 to 15.Lizton's hardest game of the tourney was against the strong Advance team, which they eliminated Sri Saturday morning's play. The first half found Lizton leading by the commanding score of 17 to 3, but Advance staged a comeback and tbo Legion barely I nosed out by a 23-to-2G score. This ! game was classed as the best of the tournament.Twenty teams were entered from jail parts of the state and the rivalry was keen. Many former high school and college stars, well known to Hoo-j sier fandom, who had not lost their i amateur rating, were in the lineups ’ of the various teams. Among these \ were Etter, R. Marlowe, Kirkby, s Strain, Hatton. Cox, Tudor, Richeson and Bowen. Lizton placed three men on the mythical all-state first team— Montgomery, forward; Robert Ratliff,I center, and Shook, guard.The Wayne Emmelmann trophy, a beautiful silver lowing cup. went to i | Clarence Montgomery, star forward on j the Lizton team. The cup was pre-' sented just before the start of the j/lnal game. Each year, Mr. Eramel-! mann awards the trophy to the player who proves most valuable to his team. At the time of presentation,' Lizton | had played In four games, and made a | total of 98 points. Of these, Mont-\ gomery had scored 59. had committed » | only one personal foul and three I • technical fouls. jj The Lizton team is composed ! j wholly of former players on Lizton j i high school teams, with the exception j | of Ward Bartlett, who is a member j j of the Lizton high school facul'y and i ! coach of the high school team. He is | ja former Wabash college player. Clar-j ence and Robert-Rati iff. brothers, were j members of Lizton high school’s 1917 I district championship team. Montgomery. Kernodle. Shook. Swp‘n and I j rigg recently have played as mcmbets \ of Liston high school teams. They j were one of the few teams entered at \ the state tourney composed wholly of j “home boys.” jMuch credit for the winning of the tournament belongs to John Swain coach of the champions, also a Lizton hoy and a former Indiana university J athlete.
