HOW “WILLE” LOST A BUNCH Of MONEY PUT UP BY HIS“WISE” BACKERS !'i ne fact has developed that Charles Wille, who was defeated in the prize-ring in this city by Dutch Thurston on Washington's birthday, was a “ringer ”, and none otner than Ted Wolfe,’the well known amateur. The follow- j ing is the manner in which it came to pass that the “Charles Wille, the! famous Chicago welterweight, “as his i manager Introduced him, came to fight! in this city and lose all the money! that his “wise” backers placed on I him. jThe management of the Bakersfield Athletic Club were engaged in securing an opponent for Thurston, and | while thus engaged a man named Sul-j livan presented himself as the manager of Charles Wille, a 148 pound fighter from Chicago, who he saidwould beat Thurston providing a sidebet could be had. Ed Harrington, the San Francisco politician and manager of the Dutchman agreed to cover the I Wille bet, and the contest was sched-J uled.Thurston trained faithfully for the t :ttl , and the first time he saw Wille J was when he shook hands with him I was on the evening of the 22nd. It was noticed that there was quite a bunch of money being offered at the ringside at even money that Wille.would win, and as Thurston was best1 known, the Thurston betters coveredthe Will# coin.Six hundred spectators saw the prettiest whirlwind fight that ever took place in Bakersfield. Wille was a scientific marvel and had a punch that sent Thurston down five times in the third and fourth rounds. Thurston was full of steam and very game. }}♦• took the punches and came back for more. In the third round Wille handed bis left and Dutch went through the ropes. Thurston gentlemanly wiped the rosin from his gloves ' and came up fresh in the fourth. This round was almost a repetition of the! (third and it certainly seemed that,I Dutch was about all in. IIt was in the fifth that Thurston broke loose and won the battle in a (lean sportsmanlike style that brought, (‘very spectator to his feet.When Wolfe was informed that lie had lost he broke into tears. He left j the city the same night and neglected: to pay a board bill which the Athletic Club immediately made good. jMike McClure has challenged Thurston and the local promoters are arranging to pull the match off on the evening of March 23. The welter-!I weights will fight at 148 pounds. This time both men are known and a pret-1 ty battle is anticipated.
