Face masks by 1980 for minor hockeyOTTAWA (CP) - Minor league hockey players will be wearing open-wire face masks by 1980, Gordon Renwick, executive director of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA), said Tuesday.Renwick said the masks, approved last month by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), may remain optional until the supply meets demand.“But that will have to be.decided at our annual meeting . in May, Renwick said. The mask is capable of withstanding the impact of a puck travelling at 115 kilometres (70 miles) an hour, a CSA spokesman said.Three brands approved were models 1580 SR and 1580 JR by Sherbrooke Sports (Canada) Ltd., models401 and 404 by St. Lawrence Steel and Wire Co. Ltd. and models HM60 and HM60 JR by Cooper Canada Ltd. They are pricedbetween $10 and $20.“The other question in May is what age levels will be affected,” Renwick said.Renwick expects the mask will be compulsory for players up to 14 years of age. This does not include junior, intermediate or senior players.“It creates too much friction to try and force juniors (age 16-19) to wear masks,” he said, “especially if they haven’t worn them before.”Renwick said it is better to have ..the younger players wear them and build slowly to the higher ranks.♦Dale Murrayhas fork, sliderafter winter ballTAMPA, Fla.
