Yuma Optimists Hold Tri-Star Cage ContestBy BOB ROBLES Yuma OptimistsThe second annual Yuma Optimal Tri-Star Basketball contest held at the KoFa Gym Saturday, February 24th, was a huge success, according to program chairman, Jim Wil-ten.The program is sponsored by the Optimist Club of Yuma, and directed in its entirety by the Yuma Parks and Recreation Department. Prominent among the recreation department directors were Will Toya, Rany Sanchez and Denise Gloria, who are also involved in the Grasshopper Program.Introduced by the Yuirm Optimists last year, the Tri-Star Basketball program this year registered an increase of 65% over that of a year ago.While only 500 clubs of 3.00P in the nation and Canada participated this year, and only 8 out of 52 in Arizona have participated to date, District Governor Ray Nichols feels that “It’s catching on, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least 1000 clubs participate nextyear.*'And Nichol's prediction may l)e prophetic since the boys delight in competing and showing their skill in passing, dribbling and shooting a basketball. Nic ho Is was also appreciative of the large number of boys that came in from the Wellton area.Arrangements are already under way for a greater number of trophies and awards to be given at next year’s contest.
