This was attempted to be pulled down hy a party of lrifli from St. GHes's, who, after being rcpulfcd, effifttd their purpofc by a reinforcement of their countrymen, after fcveral bad been wounded with cleavers, c. Several of the rioters were ttied and cad, but pardoned through the intcrcd of the Duke of Newcadle. Similar practices were then of fo general a nature, that on the fird of March it was always cudomary to flufT a goat-fkin, and hang it up near Snow-hill, in derifion of the Welch : and fince then, a Frenchman could fcarrc pafs through the vulgar parts of the town without a perfonal iufult: none of which grievances exid at prefent among the very lowed orders of people, notw ithdanding the re-introJuftion of boxing, and other athletic exercifes.
