Two neighborhood centers? We are happy that the Massillon Neighborhood Opportunity Center has reopened. Its status has been in a state of limbo since early this year when the Stark County Community Action and Planning Agency (SCCAPA) replaced the now defunct Human Development Council at the county’s federal poverty programs agency. We wish the center’s new coordinator, Mary Bigsbee, and members of her staff well in their efforts to assist the city’s needy. One question remains: Will the city-owned structures at 1416 Walnut rd SF. (the former Kalman Hall) ever house the center as originally intended when funds were allocated for its purchase? The reopened center is now at its previous location, 13 Tremont ave SW.Those who favor moving the center to the Walnut rd location argued that, once renovated, the structures would offer more space and be better located to assist those needing the center’s services. Federal funding is available to renovate the former Kalman buildings, according to one city official. So why the delay? The county has indicated it is interested in using the Kalman buildings for the neighborhood center. However, a group headed by Grier, director of the center when it was funded by the HDC, also wants 10 use the former Kalman property as its own social services center. The group headed by Grier is seeking private funding.City officials have to make up their minds as to which faction will have use of the Walnut rd property. The city does not need two neighborhood centers providing basically the same services. It is a shame that the two factions cannot work together to provide services for the needy.
