Rice, Diamond Win In County AmateurCumberland Country Club golfers Bill “Red” Rice and John Diamond made it two in a row Friday afternoon by successfully defending their Allegany County Men’s Amateur golf championship titles at the Cumberland Country Club.The proceeds from the tournament, sponsored by the CCC, Mattingley and Stotler Distributors and Stroh’s Beer, benefitted the Allegany County League For Crippled Children, Inc.Rice fired a one-under par 70 and nipped Greg Hemry of Beaver Creek CC in Hagerstown by two strokes to win the gross division championship and Diamond won the net division title with a 66. The net division used a three-quarter handicap.Rice, a graduate of Flintstone High who won the tournament last year with a four-under 67, recorded six birdies, five bogeys and seven pars for his tournament-winning score of 70 in the gross division play. Only Rice and Doug Ballenger (3-under 68 in 1984) have scored subpar rounds in winning the tournament’s gross division in County Amateur tournament play, and Rice’s 67 last year is the tournament record.Bob Hullender of Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. won a card-off and took third in gross play with a 74. Rounding out the top five, also with 74s were Mike Gocke of The Pines in Morgantown and Mike Larson of Prospect Bay.Diamond had won last year’s net division with a 68, and topped that score by two strokes to win this year’s play. John Smith, also of the CCC, was one shot off the leader’s pace with a 67, and Steve Yachmetz of Montgomery Village was third with a 68. Finishing with 69s were John Balch, Hal Chaney and George Young, all of the Cumberland Country Club.Smith was closest to the pin on the first hole and Steve Dyer, of Hanover (Pa.) CC was nearest on six. Fred Sharer was closest on number 10, Bill Trozzo on 15 and Dave Welbourne on 12 and 18. Sharer, Trozzo and Welbourne are all members at CCC. Hullender had the longest drive on the par four, 364-yard eighth hole.
