I — Saturday, June 26, 1982 — Bedford Gazette, Bedford, Pa.Bedford Places Five On County All-Star TeamBy Bill ClarkBedford, winners of the 1982 Bedford County League baseball title with a perfect 10-0 record, landed five players on the Bedford County All-Star Baseball Team elected by the county coaches,Chestnut Ridge, Everett and Tussey have two players each while Hvndman had one. Northern didn't have a player selected to the 12-man team. In addition. 17 other players were named to the honorable mention list of players who received at least one vote.Heading the list of players named are a pair of returning outfielders who saw considerable time on the mound and are two-time first-teamers — Bedford's Mike lekes and Everett’s Barry Hinish. The other Bedford players named are pitcher Troy Ritchey, catcher Charlie Howsare. first baseman Todd Streett and second baseman Scott Goad.In addition to Hinish, Everett’s Mark Clark was named to the first team,ai shortstop.Ridge's Jeff Burkett got the nod at third base. Lion junior Dave Imler makes the list as a non-designated player. The voting for three outfielders produced a tie for the third spot between Hyndman's Zane Emerick and Tussey’s Chuck Hess, so this year’s team includes four outfielders.Hess's teammate. Todd Hennessey was picked as the other nondesignaled player. The selections were clearcut at most positions. Ritchey, Ickes and Goad were the only unanimous picks (actually five of six votes because coaches can't vote for their own players).BEDFORDNot since the season has Bedford gone undefeated in the Bedford County League. This year Bedford did it with a combination of solid fielding, strong hitting and exceptional pitching. The Bisons finished with a 16-3 record, the most wins ever by a Bedfordbaseball team.Ritchey, a lanky righthander with a good fastball, went 4-1 in the regular season, turning in an ERA of 3.08 in 42-plus innings. Among the wins was ano-hitter.Ickes. who made the team as an outfielder, pitched six wins for Bedford. His only loss came in the interdistrict game against Connellsville. Ickes led the team in triples with five.li the Bisons kept records for on-base percentage, the leader this year would have to be Todd Streett.Streett walked 19 times and collected 14 hits, ten singles and four doubles, compiling a .341 average.Steve Goad, who along with Ridge's Dave Imler moved up from honorable mention in 1981, turned into a slugger this year. Goad paced the team with a .400 batting average in the regular season and 20 hits. He scored 20 times and led the team in homers with four.As Bedford coach Gary Waugerman pointed out during the season, part of the credit for Bedford’s sterling mound performances should go to the catcher—junior Charlie Howsare. Howsare was strong defensively and kepi runners honest. At the plate he averaged .353 and paced the team with six doubles.Bedford topped Somerset 5-1 for the District 5 Class AAA title and lost toConnellsville in the first round of the PIAA interdistriet playoffs.CHESTNUT RIDGEChestnut Ridge finished second in the Bedford County League with a 7-3mark. Dick Dellinger’s Lions finished the year 9-4-1 overall.Leading the Lions were two athletes who also excelled in other sports this year. Jeff Burkett was the leading player on Ridge’s basketball team, and turning his jumping talents to the county and district track meets, earned several honors In his second spring sport.Burkett is a two-year letterman who played shortstop last year, moving to third for his senior season. Burkett was Ridge’s leading hitter, averaging .410. Dellinger pointed out that against MeConnellsburg’s Chris Garber in the District 5 playoffs, and against Bedford's Mike Ickes, Burkett had Ridge’s only hits. “His quickness and jumping ability enabledBedford County All-Stars1982 BaseballName Troy Ritchey Charlie Howsare Todd Streett Steve GoadJeff Burkett Mark Clark Mike Ickes Barry Hinish Zane EmerickChuck HessTodd Hennessey Dave ImlerHONORABLE MENTION Bedford - Cary Grubb, Matt Logsdon, Rob Ooman, Scott Hardinger, Chestnut Ridge - Paul Shaffer, Kevin Gennett, Doug Hengst, Kevin Corle, Everett - Jeff Fabian, Rick Foor, Hyndman - Ted WiHison, Tim Jamison, Dale Campbell, JimLeydlg, Northern Bedford - Rob Reed, George Eckenroad,Tussey Mountain * Bob Crooks. Those players selected as non-designated are players who received votes at more than one position, or were elected by the coaches as non-designated players.Bedford b 10-0 In County LeagueBEDFORD COUNTY LEAGUE BASEBALLTeamW LPet.GBOverallBedford1001.000- 16-3Ridge73.7003 9-4-1Tussey Mt.55.5005 7-7Everett46.4008 5-10Hyndman37.3007 6-9Northern19.1009 4-9him to make some outstanding plays at third,” Dellinger pointed out.Another two-year letterman, Dave Imler has been Ridge’s starting catcher for the past two seasons. Imler made his mark in two other sports during the past year. He was Ridge’s leading runningbaek and tackier for the Lions’ grid team. He became Ridge’s only two-time regional wrestling champ and placed fifth in the state tournament.“Dave may be the only left-handed catcher within several counties,” Dellinger ventured. “This does have its disadvantages, but Dave has done a good job In calling a game and throwing runners out.”tinier was Ridge’s second-leading hitter, batting .370 and providing some power hitting.Ridge lost to McConnellsburg 3-0 in the first round of the District 5 Class AA playoffs. The Lions' tie came in a contest with Mercersburg Academy.EVERETTFor several years Everett’s baseball team was on or near the top of the Bedford County League heap. This year’s mixture of several vets and numerous newcomers ended up with a 4-6 league record and a 5-10 overall mark. Two players who seemed to be among the most consistent performers for Bob Foor's Warriors were Barry Hinish and Mark Clark.Hinish made the all-star team last year when the Warriors had five players named. Repeating as a junior, Hinish is the only player to have a shot at making the all-star team three years. The last player to do so was Everett’s Ken May, who graduated last year.Hinish, like Ickes, played the outfield when not pitching.Clark played short and proved a consistent hitter in his first year as a regular for coach Bob Foor. One player who did not repeat is Everett's Jeff Fabian, who made the team last year, but was edged out by Streett this year.TUSSEY MOUNTAINTussey Mountain ended up even for the season with a 5-5 league record. The Titans were 7-7 for coach Glenn Young.Tussey's Chuck Hess averaged .350 while playing the outfield and making some limited pitching appearances. Hess came up with 14 hits in 40 at-bats and scored nine runs.HYNDMANHyndman ended up 3-7 in the county and 6-9 for the season under coach Tony Seareia.Zane Emerick played centerfield all but one game this year for the Hornets. While he was a strong defensive player, he was the top batter on the Hyndman squad. He led the team with a .342 batting average, he collected the most hits, tied for the most homers and led the team in RBI.Scarcia reported that Emerick plans to attend Allegany CommunityCollege in Cumberland, Md.Honorable MentionOf the seventeen players named to the honorable mention list, Bedford had four — Cary Grubb, Matt Logsdon, Rob Doman and Scott Hardinger — Chestnut Ridge had four—Paul Shaffer, Kevin Gennett, Doug Hengst, and Kevin Corle-Everett two-Jeff Fabian and Rick Foor-Hyndman four-Ted WiHison, Tim Jamison, Dale Campbell and Jim Leydig-Northern Bedford two—Rob Reed and George Eckenroad—and Tussey one—BobCrooks. The 1982 ail-stars were selected by the vote of the head coaches and compiled by the Gazette.SchoolBedfordBedfordBedfordBedfordC.
