THEY WERE NOT IN IT.The Cullman Giants Pulverize theHolly Pond Amateurs.The first game of the season betweenHolly rood and the Phoenix of thisIIt1Ioily, was played at Base Ball Park | 1iWednesday afternoon at 1 : HO p. m.The Holly Pond hoys proved no matchwhatever for the Cullman (limits, andthe end of the ninth inning the scorettistood 2d to M in favor of Cullman.Cast year they were called “babies.% %and this year they have been dubbed“hams. They desi rve no such appel-lations, evidenced by the manner inwhich they handled themselves inWednesday's mime.Hendrix, who did the twirlimr foithe visitors, is an easy, graceful pitcher, and is as cool as an old veteran, liehandles himself with perfect ease, andfields his position well. lie received thephysical and moral support of the;team behind him, for the players, besides helping him all they could in theway of put outs and assists, had t he encouraging word of the “King Hooter% •every few minutes.Owing to a misunderstanding as tothe time the game would be called, ourreporter did not arrive until the game was in good headway, but on his arrival found that a strange scene wasbeing enacted—standing in the center of the diamond was a well made youngfellow w it h a sandy moustache engagedin the business of starting balls on1 heir course towards the ratchet. Mostof the time though, that course wasnever completed—it was rudely inter-rupted by the man at the bat sending t he ball sailing back into t lu* out field.while hast-runners literally gushedover the plate, and the Holly Pond rooters were as solemn and glum as t hehired mourners in a funeral procession.I'he Phoenix did not play theirusual snappy game—each one realizing the fact that they had a “good tiling,*got careless and thus allowed the visitors three runs, otherwise they wouldhave gotten a large sized goose egg.A shut-out could have been easil y administered but for three or four fielder. sw arming around a pop-fly like flies around a sugar howl, and nobody getting it.it is unneccessary to give the game in detail—the score does that, and is:Cullman... t 2 1 ii 0 1 s 2—20Holly Pond 0 1 0 01 0 0 1 0*1 • »Let us Harmonize.
