Yashin trade first in busy draft dayBy Mark LongThe Associated Press -*-SUNRISE, Fla. — Alexei YasMn was the first big-name player traded at this weekend’s NHL draft. He wasn’t the lastDisgruntled with his current contract, Yashin was traded from Ottawa to the New YorkIslanders for the second pick in the NHL draft Saturday. The Senators then selected forward Jason Spezza, the top rated player in North America.Ottawa also received forward Bill Muckalt and defenseman Zdeno Chara.It was the first deal on a busy day of trades, but none involving some of die game’s biggest names. Rumors have swirled regarding veteran stars Jaromir Jagi; Eric Lindros and Michael Peca.The St Louis Blues traded goalie Roman Turek and a fourth-round pick to the Calgary Flames for goalie Fred Brathwaite, winger Daniel Tkaczuk, forward Sergei Varlamov and a ninth-round pick.Th* FlnriHn Panther*;one of the busiest teams on the first day of the two-day draft, making four trades.They traded center Rob Nie-dermayer and a second-roundpick to Calgary for wingers Valeri Bure and Jason Wiemer. The move unites the Bure brothers, Valeri and Pavel, for the first time in their NHL careers.Florida also traded two sec-ond-round picks, Nos. 44 and 48, to New Jersey for the Devils’ first-round selection. The Panthers then picked Russian defenseman Lukas Krajicek.Other moves Saturday:♦ The Chicago Blackhawks sent defenseman Stephane Quintal to Montreal for the Canadiens’ fourth-round pick.♦ The Phoenix Coyotes and Calgary Flames swapped first-round picks, with Phoenix selecting right wing Fredrik Sjostrum 11th and Calgary picking Boston College forward Chuck Kobasew 14th. Phoenix also gave Calgary a second-round pick, 41st overall, which the Flames used to select forward Andrei Taratukhin.♦ The Flames also traded defenseman Chris St Croix to the New York Rangers for defenseman Burke Henry.♦ The Toronto Maple LeafsCfflt Ttmr ITawWthe Chicago Blackhawks for Chicago’s third-round pick.♦ Phoenix traded defenseman Jyriri Lumme to Dallas for right wing Tyler Bouck.
