Five ofFord has all but ended First National Bank’s hopes of returning to the state American legion playoffs.A six-run second inning Tuesday night before one of the season’s biggest crowds at Crysler Stadium propelled Woods past the Bankers, 10-3, and into a commanding position to determine the Fifth District’s playoff representative.Fastballing Randy Evans, after retiring the side in order in the first, was lifted in the second after giving up three hits and a walk. The Bankers are in second place at 3-2 and 15-7 over-all. Totals 33-3-7.Mueller's,Tonight inPikerVitalMeet ContestThe first early showdown of the Zenas Smith League season comes off tonight at 8 at Crysler Stadium when pacesetting Mueller’s Excavating takes on second-place Piker’s Service.It’s the second meeting of the season between the two clubs with Mueller’s taking the earlier engagement, 2-1.Mueller’s comes in with an 8-1 record, while Piker’s is only a game behind at 7-2.A Mueller’s victory would give John Doutt’s club a firm cushion in a bid to rack up a third straight championship. A Piker’s defeat wouldn’t remove Dale Hendrickson’s troops fromthe title chase, but they certainly would face an uphill battle.Piker’s by winning, however, would climb into a first-place tie, setting up a torrid second half of the season chase between the two teams.Mueller’s and Piker’s as of now are the only clubs in the title picture. Each of the other four clubs has lost at least fourgames.Robbie Barr or Rowland Fowler figures to get the start tonight for Piker’s, while Douttis expected to counter with Terry Maglich.Piker’s, although hurt frominjuries to key players, roped three victories within the past four days to set up tonight’s key game. Piker’s defeated Stewart Construction, 2-1, Saturday night, Bostian Insurance, 6-0, Sunday and rode Mike Matthews’ no-hitter to a 3-0 decision over Bostian Monday night.Statistically, there appears to be little to choose between the two teams. Mueller’s has scored 47 runs, while allowing but 16. Piker’s, however, has tallied 51 runs and given up just 14.In the first game of tonight’s doubleheader it’s Bostian going against Jerry’s United Super at 6 in a battle of the fifth and sixth-place teams.
