InternationalOlympics NodTo 7 StudentsSeven of the 31 students from Young School in Independence who participated in the 1970 Missouri Special Olympics have been selected to enter International competition at the International Special Olympics Aug. 12-15 in Chicago.Peggy Clark, Wayne Hall, Billy Cerutti, Bob Curtis, Karen Payne, Kathy Preston, and Carol Conrick will be travelingto Chicago with a grouD of 60 other young people representing the state of Missouri.The Special Olympics meet is a track and field day sponsored by the Kennedy Foundation. Before reaching the International meet, students must have competed on a local and state level. On June 6, the second annual Missouri Special Olympics was held at Missouri Valley College, Marshall.Ten Independence students returned with first place medals: Carol Conrick,Patricia Hayton, Kathy Preston, Billy Cerutti, Bob Curtis, Dennis Turley, Donald Roberts, Mark Carter, Wayne Hall, Marte Parker.The four second place winners were, Sandra Athon,Monte Parker, Peggy Clark, and Jerry Thomas.Returning with third place medals were Karen Payne, Carol Conrick, Peggy Clark, Marilyn O’Bryant, Mikell Cerutti, Darryl Simms, Billy Cerutti, Dennis Turley, Paula Landes, and Becky Cook.Other participants were Shanna Collins, Richard Kruse, Betty Payne, Mitchell Shepard, Shelly Koelling, Tamara O’Dowd, Kevin Smith, Richard Truex, Steven Messina, Mark Turner, and James Claypole.The group from Young School was sponsored by Miss Gerry Volkart, Miss Mary Gordon, and Mrs. Norena Harrold.
