V.» and one of the prettiest hitters of a golf ball t have seen in many n long day.Golf of the good old reliable club-performer type was supplied In this interesting fourbaii affair by Messrs, L M. Graves and W. U. Avery—in* deed, Mr. Graves intermittently appeared entitled to n more formidable rating about midway of the round,when, starting with a birdie at the sixth hole, he clicked off the next nine holes two strokes oetter than par.Mr. Graves and Mr. Wagner, despite the fact that they were partners, or conceivably because of it, were engaged in a putting competition on the side which induced each to adopt a somewhat curious strategy. That is, whenever possible with not; too much risk, they avoided getting the ball on the putting surface, figuring (reasonably enough) that a chip and one putt was as good as two putts in the main score and much better in the putting affair.Mr. Wagner’s walloping off the tee and through the green was prodigious. II looked prodigious even after recent observation of the walloping of Jimmy Thomson and Sam Snead in the open championship. At the acutely angled third hole, measuring 355 yards, he faced around on the tee and fired a towering drive over the intervening forest and wound up pin-high or a bit farther, and forty yards to the left of the little green —a wallop of well over 300 yards.At the fourth, a hole of 515 yards along a flat fairway in heavy turfII(ftIigiving no particular run on the ball, Mr. Wagner was just in front of the green, within chipping range, with a drive and a No. 3 iron, and you may take it from me that No. 3 iron shot traveled better than 220 yards or one furlong. At the home green, an upland affair of 280 yards on a level well above the tee, Mr. Wagner holed a chip for a deuce from off the surface, pin-high, in the first round,the second round green, nearly hit-stopping a foot offiiand his drive on rolled across the ting the pin, andthe carpet.Against a fairly tough par of 37-X7—74, Mr. Wagner’s score was 35-70, and after the first four holes he played the remaining fourteenfive better than par, which is good golf in any language.I liked the style of Signor Denofrio, the little professional, a lot, and with a rather unlucky string of breaks he worked around impressively in 87-37 —74, which is precisely par. His swing compares favorably with the methods of about 80 per cent of the better known professionals of this country, and scaling no more than 140 he gets a surprising amount of power into his big snots, with excellent control.T had a grand day at Statesville, recuperating from that somewhat terrific tournament over at Charlotte, and gained four pounds, attributable largely, I assume, to some extraordinarily palatable caramel cake of. the old-fashioned variety. I left Statesville, indeed, in the throes of a caramel cake famine, but it is impossible for me to express any regret and be truthful about it.!
