# * # #Imagine such a program beingput over here successfully at any time in the past few years. The Troubadours had one of the largest audiences here a week ago that has seen a baseball game in years and years. They played before a capacity crowd when (hey entertained the House of David baseball circns here.* * * *This man Ray Doan, who manages the Davids, is a smart publicity man. He does not advertise baseball, he urges the public to see the Davids’ baseball circus. And that is what it was. Had the baseball game alone been the attraction there wouldn’t have been more than the usual handful of faithful fans present. Well, maybe a few more who might be attracted by night baseball.# # # *I don’t know whether the UCrosse man who was bragging tohis friend of having known Grover Cleveland Alexander (Old Pete) In former years was speaking truthfully. but Pete tried to cover him up if he was. During Pete’s stay on the bench between innings during the Davids’ showing here a local man approached him from behind.* * * *Did you see so-and-so yet?” be asked.“So-and-so?” queried Pete. **I don’t believe I know him.”“Sure you do,” his questioner Interposed. “He told me just today that he met you while he was with eueh-and-such a club. You taught him how to throw his drop. He aaid you used to drop in here and see him whenever you were in this part of the country.”“I might have met him and helped him at some time or another, but I ws never in the part of the country you mentioned.” said Pete, ending the conversation.* * * *Alex told me afterwards that he didn’t want to hurt the fellow’s feelings, but be had never heard of the pitcher mentioned nor had he ever been in or around the league mentioned. “But,” he said, “I run up against those kind of people In nearly every city I hit.”* * * *Alexander did meet one oldfriend here, though It was Ole Olson, of Nelson’s Clothiers. Ole and Alex served in the same outfit overseas, and, though Ole says they were never closely acquainted, I noticed they were renewing acquaintanceship through mutual friends of those days.
