The first time Rivers fought at \md Junction, Cal-t Charlie McHugh, the secretary of the Pacific Athletic club, asked Joe his name. Joe said, “Jose Yabarra. Great .Scott!” said Charlie, “I would forget that before I could announce iL You had better take another name. Where do you live?” asked McHugh. ul live down by the river,” said Joe. “Well,” said Charlie, t4\ will introduce you as Joe Rivers. It went, and he tacked it on to himself as his fighting name. Fight critics on the coast say that Joe would never agree to fight under any othername.
