Traveling Extensively in Southwest Iow^PERHAPS SOME READERS WILL REMEMBER that quite sometime ago we told about the Orphan Train visiting Malvern back In 1901. It was preceded by a public notice in The Leader from the Children’s Aid Society of Hew York. B. W. Tice. Agent, sent here by their special agent/' Mrs. Emily L Bryant, of Burlington. Junction, Mo. Here's the initial notice:HOMES WANTED FOR CHILDREN ,A company of orphan and homeless children from the Children s Aid Society of New York will arrive at Malvern, Iowa, Thursday, April 4th, to Find good homes among the farmers and citizens of Mills andadjoining counties.The children are from 3 to 14 years of age, and have been thrown friendless upon the world and the Society, which is supported by charitable contributions, asks the citizens of this community to aid in finding home for these children who, thus aided, become useful men and women. Persons taking the children must treat them In every way as members of their family, and send them to church, school and Sunday School, and properly clothe them until they arc 1 8 years of age. It is then expected that they wili receive some wages.The following well known citizens have kindly consented to act as a committee to aid in securing homes: Thos. Paul, W. H. Crose, J. D. Paddock, W. S. Corbin and W. P. Wortman (who was publisher of The Leader at that time).Distribution will take place at the M. E. Church Thursday, April 14, 1901, at 9:30 a. m. Persons desiring to take children are requested to give their names to the committee as soon as possible. Applications must be endorsed by the local committee. B. W., Agent, etc. ,An item in a later Issue of the paper gave the result:Twelve children arrived today (April 4, 1901) from New York Children's Home Society for distribution here. As there were abput 40 applications these were soon taken. They were a bright lot and were taken by the following persons: J. C., a boy and a girl, Mrs. C. J. two boys. T. J. Wilson a girl. Harry Wilson a boy, Dr. Humphreys a boy, , Chris Plumer a girl, L Spake a boy and J. D. Redman a boy.
