Meets With CAHAPros Stomp CHABy JIM VIPONDTORONTO (Special) —National Hockey League will not do business with the newly formed Canada Hockey Association or its affiliate, the Western Canada Hockey League.Clarence Campbell, president of the NHL, made this announcement Friday following a joint development committee meeting between the NHL and the Canadian Amateur Hockey t Association.| Two weeks ago in Edmonton the old Western Canada Junior Hockey League abandoned the CAHA to affiliate with, the rebel CHA. Ron Butlin of Calgary was named president of both the CHA and the newly formed WCHL.In his press release last night, Campbell said, “All professional hockey unequivocally supports the CAIIA and the amateur hockey association of the United States as the only amateur hockey organizations in North America.’*Campbell warned all leagues, •associations, - a nd individual players that there is no possibility of recognition of the proposed CHA or any independent league that may sever their relations with the CAHA.% The NHL president also said that players who sign contracts .to play in the western group might be embarrassed and find some delay in entering pro I hockey. The NHL doesn’t want • to become involved with players who are** on contract to these teams because of the possibility of law suits.Campbell added. “The NHL has not, and never has had, any 'agreement with the CHA and has m intention, of promoting relations with it.”There are 10 teams in the WCHL — Winnipeg,- Flin Flon, Estevan, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Weybun, Saskatoon, Calgary and Echnoiilon. Reginarelinquished its franchise but the league expects to take on two more membei's .before next season.Part of the problem between the CAHA and the CHA is its difference on the age limit-of juniors.The new CHA has oli age level of 21. The CAHA rules that a boy . is ineligible if. his 20th birthday falls before Jan. 1.‘•We had- called a meeting for July 6 in Montreal to discuss meeting the western league in a new junior playoff,” said Lloyd-Pollock of Windsor, president of the CAHA. “But they went ahead and broke away from us. We were going to let the other hockey 'associations playoff for the Memorial' Cup and we’d meet the.western winners.” . •Pollock said he was aware that at least,, one OH A club (Niagara ; Falls); was sympathetic to the CHA.“The CHA is out canvassing for support, across Cauada. 'We know that Bill Hunter will be up among the NOHA teams thisweekend and Butlin is out in B.C.” said Pollock.The CAHA and NHL alsodiscussed its budget for the joint development fund.
