Well, I goofed, and omitted a few names that deserve recognition. Jeff Lendl, Simi Valley, swimming for the Valley branch of Loo AngelesAthletic Club, placed second in the boys 13-14 50-yard freestyle and third In the 100 yardfreestyle. Teammate Ellen Epstein, 15-17 age group, placed third in the girls 200-yard breaststroke.It's always a nice gesture if swimmers from one part of the city help those from another. The Lakewood Aquatic Club is trying to raise money for their travel fund. Coach Jim Montrella has taken a page from George Haines’ Santa Clara Club and the club will be selling fireworks to beef up its fund. If you are going to use fireworks this Fourth of July, let's buy them from the Lakewood Aquatic Club.If you want to pick them out, they have a stand at the southeast corner of Paramount Blvd. and Candle-wood Ave. Or if yon want to order them -by phone, call Wright Atwood at 430-2348.You probably can order and then have one of the Lakewood Aquatic Club kids bring them to you at one of the forthcoming meets. Remem* ber, the proceeds will be going into the Lakewood Aquatic Club's travel fund, and the small clubs need all the help they can get At the annual Girls Swim Jamboree conducted by the Los Angeles Junior High School Youth Services, several Valley junior high school students won events.The Hughes Junior High School girls team (Woodland Hills) won the 100-yard freestyle relay with a new record in the open division. P. Hanunian, S Castley, K. Saich and J. Brink clocked 55 seconds.Columbus Junior High School of Canoga Park won the novice 100-yard freestyle relay but I do not have the time or the members of the relay. Jackie Brink, Hughes, won the 50-yard freestyle, setting a new record of 28.0, and teammate Pam Hanunian won the 75-yard individual medley.Linda McDade, Van Nays Junior High School, achieved two victories, winning the novice 25-year freestyle and 25-yard backstroke. She also was third to the 25-yard breaststroke.I feel reasonably sure that I have again omitted some names, and as soon as the official results of this meet—as well as the senior high school girls meet—are available. I’ll give you the rundown.V alley swimmers looked pretty sharp at the senior A” district long-course meet last week end at Golden West College.Roger Lyon from Harvard School swam in almost every event and, after two days of muscle, showed an amazingly fast win in the 100-meter butterfly (50.8). He achieved a pair of seconds in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle; a pair of thirds in the 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley and a fifth in the 200-meter butterfly.Ken Merten, Los Angeles Athletic Club, was second by a judges decision in the 100-meter breaststroke, but came back to easily win the 200-me-tcr event. She was second and third in the 200-Tncter and 100-meter free-slyle events, respectively.Her litne for the 200-meter backstroke was only Jive second* off the* world mark and onh ihrcMcmhs of a secondslower than her best time achieved last year. It certain ly looks like Cathy Is going to be ready to go back after her world marks.Teammates Diane Giebel and Denise Pearson placed well in four events. Diane won silver medals in both the 100-and 200-meter butterfly, and placed fifth In both the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter individual medley. Denise was third in both butterfly events, fourth in the 200-meter individual medley and fifth in the 400-meter medley.(Sail Radenbaugh, LAAC, was fifth in the 100-meter butterfly.This week end. This is our own big age group meet and is co-sponsored by The News.There will be team trophies and proceeds will go into the San Fernando Valley travel fund. Jeff Asher, Terry Wilson and 'Jack Boss, to name a few, are hard at work selling ads and setting up the program. If your club hasn’t met its ad quota, don’t waste any more time. Let’s go.The kids will need lots of money this year and next with the nationals taking greater importance as they are the basis for selection on one of the two or three U.S. teams still to be selected. The meet will carry both “A” and “B” events. Let’s get behind it and make it the best in the district this year.The Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Dept, has announced that It is planning to conduct, later this summer, the 1967 Municipal Games. Among the events planned are diving and water polo. No mention of swimming was made in the firet release.
