Crowds Enjoy Baseball and Com£dy by Bearded^J|i?lt;UlJ*vid Players -What a whale of a difference a few sideburns make! Many Daykin youths gave their girls a buggy ride to Fairbury last Thursday night to see the famous House of David baseball team in action under the floodlights.Nor were they disappointed. Nor were the 1500 or more other fans (season’s biggest crowd) who saw the bearded professionals from Benton Harbor, Michigan. It thrilled men and boys alike to see the athletic pitcher, Bergin, wind up with his powerful overhand swing and whizz the balls over the plate. We hope the umpire could see the balls; most of the fans couldn’t.And the fast, easy-going infield in action — balls caught and thrown without an instant’s hesitation. And all dark faces, dark sideburns that hid good natured smiles. The fast pepper play between innings drew much applause.Nor was the comedy overlooked, First Baseman Tucker, with a voice of hog-calling calibre that carried far on the evening breeze, delighted the big crowd with his sleights of hand and artistic baseball tricks during the intermissions. An adept at one-handed catches, he caught them with gloved hand behind his back, between his legs, everywhere. Once he removed his cap and dixlosed a neat “pigtail.”Another thing noticed: The base runners depend absolutely on their coaches. Racing toward third, Tucker yelled: “Waddayasay ?Whaddayaeay ?” The coach evidently had been slow with his signal. Without looking where the ball went, Tucker raced in home and made it with little time to spare. If he had turned and looked for the ball, he’d never made it.The House of David lineup: Hus-son 3b, Brady If, Tucker lb, Wy-ckofT rf, Clift cf, Atwill ss, Hansen 2b, Fleming c, Bergin p.The score? It makes little difference, as the fans came to see the bearded players perform. The House of David beat the Fairbury Independents, 12 to 4. It was 10-0 at the end of the sixth.
