Class B all-state baseball squad selected byBy The Associated PressThree repeaters from a year ago head the 1979 Associated Press Class B All-State baseball team.The 11-man squad, selected by sports writers and broadcasters and released today, includes just two juniors.Senior first baseman Mike Ward of Alma and infielders Joe Ghema of Three Rivers and Ron Henika of Essexville Garber are the three repeaters from 1978.Ward, a three-sport star at Alma, is a lefthanded batter who hit .425 with four home runs. Ghema batted .460 and Henika had a .548 average.Gherna, who batted .500 with 14 homers and 35 RBI a year ago, had eight homers, 30 RBI and scored 25 runs this season for a career total of 25 homers and 84 RBI.Henika, a .462 hitter in 1978 with seven home runs and 35 RBI, added five homers and 21 RBI this year. He also stole 14 bases and didn’t strike out in 53 at-bats.The team’s two pitchers — Paul Assenmacher of Southgate Aquinas and Randy Morse of Bay City All Saints — are both senior lefthanders.Assenmacher, voted the top pitcher in the Catholic League’s AA Division, had a one-hitter and five two-hitters in his 9-3 record.He allowed just 35 hits and seven earned runs in 86 innings while walking 30, striking out 113 and compiling an 0.55 no-hitter, compiling a 0.50 ERA with just three earned runs in 54 innings. He allowed only 17 hits, walked eight and struck out 100.The other infielder was junior Bruce Seid of Oak Park, who batted a whopping .592 with 45 hits in 76 trips. He belted 16 doubles and two homers, scored 32 runs and drove in 30 and has a three-year career average of .520.Hastings’ Dan King was the catcher. He is a three-year varsity player with a .426 average and 19 RBI this season.The outfield includes junior Chip Skinner of Saline and seniors Randy Caldwell of Richmond and Ted Green-man of South Haven.Skinner batted .395 with 30 hits and 16 walks as the leadoff batter. He also scored 31 runs and stole 23 bases.Caldwell had a .484 plate mark, scoring 27 times whle driving in 19 more runs. He only struck out once in 74 trips to the plate.Greenman had a .453 batting average with 34 hits, 35 runs scored and 24 stolen bases in 26 attempts for South Haven. Outfielder Paul Dulik, a teammate of Greenman’s, batted .398 and reeived special mention.Mike Hoydic of Flint Powers was selected as the designated hitter. Hoydic batted .422, knocking in 35 runs with his 30 hits, including nine doubles and eight home runs.
