Robison, Mortimer on first teamBy Steve TreuNew Castle NewsMatt Robison was Wilmington Area High’s best pitcher, he hit over .400, he belted the team’s only homer of the season, he led the Greyhounds in both runs scored and doubles and was the club’s runnerup in RBIs.As a sophomore.Although it is unusual to get such outstanding production from a 10th grader, Robison’s performance this spring came as no surprise to his coach.“I expected big things out of him,” Wilmington coach Scott Shearer said. “I’ve worked with Matt since eighth grade. He has been a great athlete his whole life.”Robison was just one of two sophomores to be named to the Mercer County Athletic Conference’s Class AA All-Star Baseball Team. He was joined on the squad by teammate Curt Mortimer, a senior outfielder.Robison was selected as a pitcher, having crafted a 3-2 mark this season with 49 strike-“Matt was dominant at times. ... As he gets older and learns more about the game mentally, he’s really going to dominate.”- Scott Shearerouts despite missing a few starts due to other baseball obligations. He possesses a good fastball — in the mid-80s — and a sharp curve.“Matt was dominant at times,” Shearer said. “He has good size (6-4) and great arm strength. As he gets older and learns more about the game mentally, he’s really going to dominate.”Equally as productive at the plate, Robison hit .411 (23 for 56) with 15 RBIs, 14 runs and four doubles.Robison was second on the team in run production to Mortimer, who collected 20 RBIs and 11 runs while batting .404 (21 for 52) for the 10-7 ’Hounds.“Curt was definitely our clutch guy,’Shearer said. “He always came up with the big catch or big hit when we needed it.”Mortimer acquired his baseball skills the old-fashioned way — he earned them.“Curt’s a worker,” Shearer said. “He is always working on his hitting and it paid off for him.”Shortstop Justin Napotnik of Sharpsville was the only other sophomore to be selected for the all-conference team. Senior John Napotnik of the Blue Devils was tabbed the MVPRounding out the all-star squad were junior pitcher Dan Bender (West Middlesex), senior catcher Billy Duvutovich (Sharon), junior first baseman Walt Novosel (West Middlesex), junior second baseman Jason Monsman (Kennedy Christian), senior third baseman Scooter Renninger (Kennedy Christian), senior outfielder Tim Van Buren (West Middlesex), senior outfielder Ken Miller (Sharpsville) and junior designated hitter Adam Buxton (West Middlesex).
